Wisconsin State Fair Day 1: Thursday July 31st

The Main Stage Review:

The 6800 fans at the Wisconsin State Fair mainstage luckily did not have to "Ride the storm out" but obviously decided that they were going to "keep on lovin" REO Speedwagon after 35 years of rockin'. For being as "old" as they are, REO put on a relatively high energy show for a good hour and 30 minutes. Now, I am not sure what kinds of crowds they are getting in other venues, but right before the lead singer went on the stage, he looking into the crowd and asked his manager, "When is everyone going to show up?" I think getting a solid 6000 for a band who really has not had a hit song in a long time is quite good, and he displayed that a band can still sound like a quality rock band with very good vocals after 35 plus years. The crowd was very into the show, yet well behaved. Before the show everyone was worried that REO's manager didn't want any rules in regards to fans standing in front of the stage the entire show. The people who paid top dollar for their tickets all of a sudden had worse seats than the people who paid bargain basement prices. The other thing that amazed me was that they have been going at this so long yet still genuinely enjoy performing on stage. After the show they met in a casual setting with many of their biggest fans. Much more personable than the normal meet and greet.
Other thoughts on the fair:
It was so great to spend some time at the fair. The problem was I didn't take out $200 so I couldn't eat everything I wanted: cream puff, beef jerky from Silly Dilly, turkey leg, corn dog, cheese nuggets, nacho grande, corn, milk, pork sandwich, ect, ect, ect...
So today I simply went with beef jerky and cheese nuggets...might be why my stomach hurts right now.
It was so great to see everyone again. I had a great time helping the patrons at the fair. They are generally so courteous and thankful. Even when I was telling a few people things they did not want to hear, I was doing it with a smile and a cheerful attitude...and they responded in kind. We all had a good time...I wish that could happen in more places more often.
