Americans agree on answer to gas prices: Drill now

Liberals are going to get beat up on this if the media reports it correctly and fairly...

The survey found 67 percent of voters support drilling for oil off American coasts, and 64 percent believe it at least somewhat likely drilling will lead to lower prices at the pump.

a few important things you should know from the house committee on natural resources report from june 2008:

Among the most interesting points:

* Drilling on federal lands has steadily increased since the 1990s

* Drilling permits have gone from 3,802 five years ago to 7,561 in 2007

* Oil and gas companies have shown that they cannot keep pace with the rate of drilling permits (so opening the Gulf and ANWR would help how, exactly?)

* Although permits have gone up, the price of gas has ALSO gone up, refuting the idea that more drilling will automatically reduce prices

* The Bureau of Land Management has issued 28,776 permits to drill on public land; yet, only 18,954 wells were actually drilled (a difference of 9822)

* Of the 47.5 million acres of on-shore federal lands that are currently being leased by oil and gas companies, only about 13 million acres are actually in production

* Offshore, only 10.5 million of the 44 million leased acres are currently producing oil or gas

* According to the Minerals Management Service, of all the oil and gas believed to exist on the Outer Continental Shelf, 82% of the natural gas and 79% of the oil is located in areas that are currently open for leasing

* Nearly 91 million acres are currently open to leasing in the Arctic region of Alaska, including onshore and offshore lands. Oil and gas companies have leased only 11.8 million of the 91 million acres.

The report goes on to say that just drilling in these 68 million acres (this excludes the Alaska acreage, because much of it is still unleased by the oil companies even though it is available to lease) of untapped areas without drilling anywhere else would likely produce six times the amount of oil in ANWR. Yes, that's right: SIX TIMES what ANWR is estimated to be able to produce at peak production. And if they'd bother to lease the Alaska areas that are available, that number would undoubtedly go much higher.

The Donkeys show their true anti-american colors in denying energy to the public.

yes, environmentalist protest and file lawsuits and block drilling and refineries all the time...
It is sad you have no idea how badly your thought process hurts our country.
Have fun with your $4 a gallon has, you and your liberal friends want it that way...
I'm sorry, you want it at $8 or $10 a gallon

i don't particularly like paying $4.50 a gallon, but I prepared for it by buying a hybrid. i'm willing to pay more for gas because i believe in the long run, my children and their children will benefit from a cleaner environment and sustainable energy sources because I'm sacrificing a bit now.

don't tell me about how high prices are because of environmentalists. i've given you the truth about the current ability to drill and the oil companies not doing so, but apparently you refuse to believe it because it doesn't fit your "world view". and if you actually did any reading on the subject, you'd know that gas prices are less about drilling for oil and more about unregulated speculation markets and the falling value of the dollar.

instead of dwelling on my "thought process", why don't you sit yourself down and ask yourself when the environmentalists have had more power than the oil companies and their lobbies. follow the money, game. who really benefits from higher prices (see oil company earnings)? who really benefits from controlling offshore leases that already aren't being developed? who really benefits from 190,000 troops and another 150,000 civilians in iraq and afghanistan (halliburton-kbr).

who really benefits? who are the winners here?

Not really buying those numbers. Especially numbers that are unchangable. I would bet I could debate someone in favor of drilling and I could convince 70 percent or more there are better ideas out there. If they support drilling it's because they haven't heard other solutions.

I'll raise you one monster truck to your hybrid. I'll just roll over the top of you. End of your stupidity.

Wow, your problem solving ability is so amazing PCD..How could anyone doubt your intelligence and ability for complicated thinking!?

hmmm, let's see. the republicans want "more drilling" where they are already able but not drilling. and more refineries when current refineries are operating at only 85% capacity.

sounds like a red herring to make it look like the democrats don't want to help people who are struggling with gas prices.

in an election year? who would do that?
