Arbitrator rules in favor of school board on contract with MPS teachers

Well, the teachers have lost. We have not had a contract for two years and the third year of not having a contract started today. This is not getting me really excited about starting school Thursday.

Teachers do not make a lot of money. Many of my friends make a good $7,000 more than me, some do not have college degrees. Teaching in MPS is hard. I believe that I am a good, effective teacher. I want to teach the kids who need it the most, which are the kids of MPS.

So, I make very little money, and now I will make even less money. I have spent $11,000 to get a masters degree, so I can get a raise....do any of you have to spend 11K to get a raise? Now, because we have lost, my raise will be cut in half.

In addition, I will have to pay out up to $500 a month for my insurance. Going from having the best insurance in the world to crappy insurance AND having to pay for it is a shock to the system.

So, you have a very good teacher who wants to teach the hardest kids to teach in the state of Wisconsin...so you give him one of the lowest salaries in the state, now the worst health insurance, lower his raise, and make him start paying for this crappy insurance...ummmm...why should I stay?

I know, I know...you don't go into teaching for the money...but it would be nice to be able to pay my bills for all the hard work I do. This might be it for me...off to another city or another profession... shouldn't teachers in Milwaukee have a better contract than the teachers in the suburbs?

What do all you non-teachers think? Am I just being a baby? Do I make enough money since I get so much time off? Do you not care because everyone else pays for their insurance already?

Let's hear it people.

I am simpathetic to your plight, Game. Being very involved with my kids' education, I know what a good teacher means to their education and my sanity.

Are you in a union? If yes, where are they? If not, it kind of fits the Conservative notion that each individual should have the capability or power to negotiate pay and benefits with their employer individually. Good luck with that.

Having said that, I truly do wish you better pay for the job you do. Good luck with THAT!

That sucks.........It's a brutal reality that we send our kids out to people making crap for money.

I'll admit, this is why I have stayed in the medical field......I used to want to teach, but couldn't take the pay-cut, and didn't want to join an onion (spelling intentional).

Good luck game.

By the way, hope you don't mind me stealing that bumper-sticker......I guarantee you'll see that one on my blog.

go right ahead pero...
I pay $90 a month to my teachers union so they can spend it on liberal ads against Bush and other republicans...that was a great use of money...

You have some of the highest teacher requirements in the country imposed on the educators of Wisconsin, why doesn't the pay scale reflect that? In California to teach you need 5 more classes to get your clear teachign credentials, however you get pain on average $10,000-$20,000 more a year. Where is the justification? No, Californian teachers aren't overpaid, you're just underpaid as an educator in this state.
I understand your situation fully game, I'm sorry. You really do have to make serious sacrifices to be an educator, many people don't understand the time committments and financial issues associated with your career. The choices you must make are difficult, however, remember that not just inner city children need guidance and that you can offer just as much to suburban children if you decide to take a more lucrative teaching position.

Salaries suck for teachers.........And teachers suffer.

Sadly, our children pay the ultimate cost.......

Scorpion says--
Again the MPS teacher got kicked.Oh, says the uninformed whiner about the easy life of teachers, you get the summer off! Still,no paychecks from June to September doesn't pay the mortage, any bills, or buy any food.Again the "U.W."will say take the summer pay plan to have checks all year!Would anyone give up 25% to 35% of their earnings to get 70-75%of their money all year? Tell the uninformed whiner no one would handle their money that way.Masters degree Game? I taught for thirty-three years, and it wouldn't have been to my advantage to get my Masters degree financially, instead of working other jobs, until the contract prior to this one.Any "U.W.'s" still out there? Come see the Scorpion, I'll explain the Math for you. Finally, the uninformed whiner will say you had your health benefit paid for you! Being the "U.W."talking again, this means they don't understand that the QUALIFIED ECONOMIC OFFER imposed by the state on teachers and no one else, made for NO raises in salary for those at the top of their pay scale since it went into effect.Gee! If we could have negotiated a raise every two years instead of the money going directly towards the insurance plan we could have paid towards our insurance plan many contracts ago!Once again for the"U.W." if a teacher has 30%more earnings they will pay towards insurance payments. Finally, again, don't forget MPS has the money for this two-year old contract settlement sitting in their account until they finally settle a new contract!Sorry,Game, just wanted to"educate"the uninformed whiner.

that is right...the whole time the contract wasn't solved, MPS kept all the money...do any of you want a .1% raise? Do any of you not want to work without a contract for over 2 years? Didn't think so.
