Is the media fair and balanced?

What is the bigger story?
"...You know, I don't know about this doctrine of assassination, but if he thinks we're trying to assassinate him, I think that we really ought to go ahead and do it.

“If I read this to you and did not tell you that it was an FBI agent describing what Americans had done to prisoners in their control, you would most certainly believe this must have been done by Nazis, Soviets in their gulags, or some mad regime, Pol Pot, or others that had no concern for human beings,” Durbin said.

A liberal radio network takes $875,000 of tax NY tax payer money earmarked for a Boys and Girls Club so they can pay their bills.

So now the media is running stories all over the place, for a guy who has no influence in the Bush administration.

Where were all the front page stories when:
1. Air America stole $875,000 from poor, African American children from the Bronx to run their failing radio station?
2. Joseph Biden compared our military to that of Hitler and Pol Pot?
3. When Robert Byrd used the "n" word a few times in a single month?

If this was President Bush or a top official saying this, it might be different...

The left leaning media is just upset because they think that people like Robertson lead a movement getting enough religious folk to go out and vote, allowing GWB to win in 2004...

Now they have their revenge.

Robertson is just a guy who said crazy stuff...

The other stories deal with elected Democrats making much more offensive comments...

You are correct that the MSM is mostly national papers and the TV...but local papers are not balanced either...even though the FCC is run by conservatives and so is the legislature...roughly 90% of people in the newsroom and print rooms are liberals...studies have been done to show this...

I have commented many times as to how this creates a slanted reporting of the news...

Wait a minute...Biden's quote clearly compared what the military did in Cuba to Hitler and Pol Pot...sorry if I did not make that clear...he is commenting after he read reports from Club-gitmo..

Your last post seems much more brain-washed liberal than what you usually say...much more "I hate Bush"...

Bush accomplishments...
passed tax cuts and revived the economy...
Was inspiration for a country after 9-11...there is almost NO ONE who would have wanted Gore in office after 9-11, even democrats were saying that...
Bush freed two countries and (if he doesn't give in to the cut and run/PC/I hate America/we want America (the terrorists) to lose to the terrorist (freedom fighters)will bring an entire part of the world out of the 400's...

This type of talk is why democrats have lost every election since 1992...

Sorry anamericanaway, you are getting a bit crazy now...

How can you sit there with a straight face and defend Biden's comments...by saying "one would think" he is saying "what I just read sounds just like something that was done by Hitler's army or Pol Pot" It is not hard to figure out...

No one argues that it was Bush who pushed for the tax cuts, once again you are grasping at straws and failing miserably...

I do not think it is a failure in the middle east when two evil dictators are gone...elections have taken place, schools are being built, women can work, go to school, think, walk outside, people are no longer locked in torture chambers, constitutions have been passed and elections health where the people now have a voice in what kind of government they have...

ya, that sounds like a complete failure...come on man...

And the elections in the UK...The guy who keeps winning...Blair...back Bush, so essentially the UK voted to back the war again...even if the local votes were different...

Have a good day

OK, first off, it was Senator Dick Durbin, not Joe Biden who referred to treatment of detainees in Gitmo. He did NOT compare "the military," to anybody. He compared how these prisoners in this place were treated by these jailors. And he was reading from the eye-witness report of a government official. If you strip everything else away and simply read the description, the comparison would be valid.

But this is the conservative framing trick. If someone complains or criticizes the actions or policies of military (uniform or civilian) leadership, then by extension they are criticing Lance Corporal Joe Schmo who is enduring the heat, sand, and daily danger in Iraq to fight the "war on terror." Nice trick.

The Air America Steals Money from the Poor story has gone nowhere because there is nothing to report. There is an allegation from Michael Horowitz and every winger has picked up on this. Horowitz's only source is "unidentified informed sources." Apparently these sources played "six degrees of separation" and went from a director of the Kids Club directly into Al Franken's pocket. It's about the same as Pentagon no-bid contracts to Halliburton putting money directly into Cheney's pocket. Wait a minute...oh never mind.

Are you implying the local papers all over the country are mostly biased to the left? Based on what?

Printers print the words. They could be commies or aliens for all the influence they have on the content.

Reporters write the words. Editors control the final content except as controlled by guidelines or influence of the corporate owners.

I must agree that the tax cuts come from Bush Administration Policy. You can read Paul O'Neill's (co-written) book for more on that. But I'd like you to show me that the economy has benefitted from them. And then there's the deficit...

In my opinion, Iraq is a disaster. But even the Phoenix rose from the ashes. It's possible that Iraq may come out of this a peaceful, liberal democracy and provide stability to the region (so we will have a source of oil if Saudi Arabia goes to hell). But the Bush Administration and especially the Rumsfeld Defense Department has displayed colossal incompetence in every facit of the endeavor (with the execption of the first six weeks of the war, and that carrier landing). How could anybody expect anything but the worst as long as they are in office?

A note of correction, aaa, I believe you are referring to Lloyd Bentsen's comment in the Quayle debate regarding "no JFK."

Jim,
Can you explain that the last three times there has been major tax cuts there has been great bosts in the economy? JFK, Reagan, Bush.

I don't know how many times I can spell out the positives of the war, you guys just keep ignorning them.

As far as papers and media being biased to the left...I am not going to go over it again here....my blog is full of examples and everytime I see more, I will let you know.

Well, if it takes 300 billion to keep the world from being terrorized and taken over by Muslim extremist..I think it is money well spent...

Can't get good numbers on how long the economy lasted under JFK..but Reagan’s lasted at least 8 years.

On a side note...I really do enjoy comments like the ones from Jim and AAA...and it is nice to see AAA making calm, thought out comments again...I still think they are wrong...but they sound better..

oh, I almost forgot to agree with you...I am mad that GWB made the number one reason to go to Iraq WMD (I’m sure this is what you are talking about). In this regard we have failed...I think they have just been moved, but...

Game,

Reagan and Bush (I) ended up having to raise taxes, didn't they? JFK didn't have a chance to.

If today's economy is so great, how come nobody thinks so except for the oil and oil services (Halliburton)companies? The stock market isn't going anywhere.

In the mean time, our deficit increases at a third to a half trillion (with a T) dollars a year. So today's economy may be great by your standards (although hardly any working folk think so), but my kids and your kids and their kids aren't going to think so for the next 50 to 60 years.

Question: Why are you mad that GWB made WMDs the number one reason for invading Iraq? Regardless of what (if anything) positive comes out of this endeavor, what other argument he might have made at the time would have 1) been worth the lives and treasure and 2) convinced Americans that they should invest their lives and treasure to invade Iraq?

Finally, civility breeds debate (I just made that up). That's why we're still having fun, right?

The Game said...

Jim, now you are just making shit up...we are increasing jobs by hundreds of thousands a month..the deficit is not half a trillion...

I'm too tired and a bit drunk...so I will not look up links to prove my point...

Jim, come by anytime...it is fun to debate with you.

If it was ONLY $300 Billion, and we had it to spend, maaayyyybbbeeee it would be worth it. But it's about $300B SO FAR. Oh and 1,850 KIA and 11-12,000 wounded.

anamericanaway,I'll give you this much, you really try to support your ridiculous opinions. The truth is though, you are RAMBLING. Actually, the more threatened you are by news articles opposing your views, the MORE you RAMBLE ON. That is obvious to anyone who has read your comments on the game's blog. To quote you: "I must say"...you're a bore. Your sorry attempts at intellectualizing to try and convince others your opinions are sound, are silly verbiage. Facts do not require such ramblings, which is why the game can keep it short, simple, and to the point. He's right, the facts are obvious, and don't require him to RAMBLE ON. Here's a hint anamericanaway, if you want others to tolerate your nonsense, at least TRY to KISS.

There were battles in WWII where more Americans were killed than the entire Iraq war

Game,

How much is the deficit?

Regarding the economy, the NUMBERS say one thing, the people don't seem to have a lot of good feeling about it (even before the gas prices started climbing). For every economist who says the economy is going great, there is another who disagrees. So I would say there is certainly not a consensus that the economy is ripping along. And so if THIS is what a great economy feels like, I'm not feeling too good about when the next downturn comes along.
