Mandatory sick days

I was listening to Charlie Sykes on the way to work this morning, and he started to talk about a law that is proposed in Madison that would require every business in Madison to give every employee sick days.

The way it was described, every employee would be allowed to have leave without pay whenever:
They call in sick
Their kids are sick
They have a doctors appointment...

Just like most social programs, this SOUNDS like a great idea on the surface...However...

Shouldn't it be up to the businesses to go through the collective bargaining process for things like sick days?

Isn't this something that is worked out between employee and employer?

Does this mean some kid that works at McDonalds can call in with a hangover and get paid?

My original thought is that if you are someone who works even a half-way decent job, you are going to have sick days....So who is this for?

Teenagers working minimum wage, part-time jobs do not need sick days.

Doesn't this just add another burden to business owners? Isn't this just going to be another thing that hurts small business?

Sykes other point was that if this law actually passes, it might spread throughout the state or country. The smoking ban bills are everywhere now, I won't even start on that.

So essentially, should the government be able to add this entitlement program?

It is another feel good idea that, in my opinion, has a lot of down side to it.

yes, it was with pay...I'll try and change that...

I think what you are saying is that when someone takes off of work, their job doesn't get done and then someone else has to do that job or the company suffers...

The company is going to suffer because they will either:
not get that work done for the day
have to hire a temp
pay someone overtime...

all three options force the company to lose money that day...the government already does enought to hurt buisnesses, especially a place as liberal as Madison...

Very good point commish...

All these social entitlements that the left tries to pass as helping workers actually hurts workers because when businesses do not have any money, they can't hire any more people...

exactly why the tax cuts spurred the economy...people had money, spent money, businesses made money, hired more people to make more stuff for more people to buy, more people had jobs, bought more stuff, business made more money, hired more workers, unemployment rate at 5%
