Anyone who lives in the Midwest knows that Madison is the party capitol of the world (if you are between the ages of 18-25).
This is a great college town were life is lived to the fullest...
Then you have people at Madison saying that this study is garbage, and that Madison is not a party school anymore...What is the big deal?
The criteria are: alcohol and drug use, hours of study each day, and the number of students in fraternities and sororities.
Most people who go to college will say that most of what they learned happened outside of the classroom...It happens in the dorms at 3 am...it happens in fraternity houses, it happens on late night runs to Taco Bell...
College is a time to figure out who you are, what you are all about. I lived in a frat house, and that is where I learned how to deal with people from all walks of life...I had a 3.69 GPA...I had to learn how to balance studying, class, football, work and partying...How does someone who commutes to school and drives back home to their parents house learn a damn thing? College is not about what is in the books, it is about experiencing life...
My frat house was closed my second senior year...from that day on I felt terrible for anyone who went to my college...some of the best memories of my life are in that frat house, I wouldn't have met my wife, I would not have as great a life as I do if that frat house wouldn't have made me as able to deal with people, issues, stresses and responsibility...most of my best friend to this day were there battling with me..
Man, I look back on college and see how I did things, I have memories that so many people were not fortunate enough to have...
I watched every movie, danced to every song, drank every drink, talked to every type of person in the world..held events with a hundred people to watch me perform, and had a radio show listened to by thousands that sounds much better than most shows on the air today...Who can say they did all that? I read the books too...
I learned all the facts that I already forgot..But I have stories that are so great that they couldn't be made up...I bonded with people who will be my friends for life...I learned how to communicate, to live.
So who cares if a school is a party school...in my opinion that is a school teaching their students the most....
Comments welcome...or fun college stories as well...

i could start a whole blog on this topic, but i must comment here not only because i went to the same college as the game, and hung out at the same frat house, but because i was a commuter for the 1st semester my freshman year. it was like paying a lot of money to take AP (advanced placement) classes in high school. i met no one, hung out with no one and went home every night and hated it. i even thought of transferring. i decided that i was going to move into the dorms 2nd semester and it quite honestly changed my life for the better. i started meeting new people and found a few parties. i still managed to maintain my GPA, but for the 1st time, i felt a part of something. to this day, the best friends i have are a result of that decision. people like to criticize the fraternities/sororities because they are an easy target. when in truth, it is the individual that attends the party that is solely to blame. i have been to many different frat houses on many different campuses, including madison...and what i saw was people who wanted to have fun, but when faced with an issue, dealt with it first hand. these cases of alcohol poisoning and falling off balconies are unfortunate, i'm not a sadistic a$$hole. what the papers and news stories don't tell you is that these cases are extremely isolated and rare, and the victims are not those that are dancing down in the basement (in my case) or in the main areas of the party. they are in the closed off bedrooms or private areas that no one should be in the first place. call me crazy, but i feel that people still hold a personal responsibility for themselves, if you can't hold your liquor, don't go out and do 8 shots of jager in an hour. when you take a step back and see that these are STUDENTS in a college environment, they should be smarter than that. what happens when they graduate, are they going to have someone hold their hand at the 1st job?
i guess my long story, well long...is that college is the time of discovery. things are different. i went to a high school that was very sports driven. i played soccer and tennis and as you can guess, those are not the sports that get you the girls or the popularity. when i got to college, the people i met saw me for who i was/am. i didn't see the "jock" lunch table in the MDR or the "cheerleader" table. i saw people, and people saw me. that is why i have maybe 5 good friends from high school and out of that probably only 1 that is a friend for life. but in my 5 years at college (i studied abroad for 1 semester so i don't want to hear it!!!) to today, i have been blessed with so many friends it's almost unfair. these are REAL people and without the party/fraternity environment, i don't know that i would have met them.
Our frat house was the safest places to be..why would we want a bunch of strangers wrecking our house?
It was the house parties, with 50 people crammed into the living room with one keg that were dangerous...and if the cops came you were kicked out and ticketed...
Totally off topic:
What's with the anti-Bush ads you have at the top of your blog??
I am glad to see you are reflecting on our glory days sir. I must say that was the greatest time in my life. It wasn't made great because I got stupid drunk all the time and got to do whatever I wanted, it was bonds I made. We met our wives there, our others freinds did too. How many weddings were the result of that house, that home, and the environment of freindship and trust? How many children are the results of those bonds? My stupid peice of paper with the name of the college means nothing to me. I learned every bit of knowledge I bother to credit myself with from my actions in the workplace. College is about the lessons of life, and those lessons are best learned where a school acts less like a parent and more like a school. Of course these places get the "party" label because individual responsibility is a challenge. That is why liberalism is a failure, even though people may stumble it is the challenge of personal responsibility that yields the best results.
Its an ad service i have...I don't control the content...or I am not smart enough to know how too...
My college years were a mixed bag. It was the best of times and the worst of times.
Looking back is bittersweet; but definitely, those experiences shaped who I am today.
well put joe...personal responsibility is one of the most important components of what makes this country the best in the world. mistakes are made, i have made them, and i have paid for them. but i have also learned from them and am now a better citizen as a result of it.
Schools are run by liberals, and they HATE personal responsibility...
If an entire organization or government is in charge, then no one is to blame, and everyone can do whatever they want...
In this case, it is the theory that people can not take care of themselves...that is why in Europe 6 year olds can drink legally in bars (exaggerate for effect) and kids are given condoms with every school lunch..and they have less drinking problems and teen pregnancy problems...
They at least have this right...let people live life for themselves, let them make mistakes, let them learn...in this country people want to shelter everyone from everything, so no one gets hurt...but then no one can explore, live, that is the American way...
When did we decide we were going to get so damn sheltered...it takes away from the human spirit...
Never been to UW-Mad, but I can't see how it could be more of a Party School then Arizona State University.
It's a joke out in Tempe, and I hate having go go to class with a bunch of teenage girls in bikinis in the classroom............Uhhhhhh!
