Should New Orleans be rebuilt?

President Bush has vowed to rebuild New Orleans, but should we?

It is going to cost 40 Billion dollars to rebuild that city, probably much more.

It is build 7 feet below sea level.

So we are going to rebuild a city that will be flooded again in 30 years?

I think we have seen the modern destruction of a city....

When you would hear about a city being completely destroyed in the history books, the thought was always "that could never happen now."

Well, it just did.

I feel bad for all those people (not the looters), but it has to be in the best interest of everyone to just build up an area above sea level and start over.

I thought it was silly when Steve Czaben was suggesting it on "Bob and Brian"....but now, looking at the pictures, this city looks finished...

Hastert Questions Rebuilding New Orleans

Just look at the before and after photos

Should we rebuild New Orleans? Well, why not, but this time, like the Six Million Dollar Man, we can build it stronger...

Scorpion says--
What would the anti-Bushers say if they didn't rebuild? The "U.W.'s" are blaming him already!Interesting dilemma.

Seattle used to have terrible flooding problems (not like this, but bad).........They rebuilt the city on top of the old city.

New Orleans must be elevated.......It has happened before and should be done again.

I don't even think it's a question if we should.......WE ARE AMERICANS!!! We must rebuild it.

I agree...if we do rebuild, it has to be elevated...but just rebuilding it exactly the same will take years...I think that many will relocated instead of waiting to rebuild in that area.

I think it was Neil Cavuto that made this point:

After the 1906 earthquake wiped out San Francisco, it was rebuilt. The threat of future earthquakes didn't cause the people to abandon their city.

It will take years, but New Orleans must be rebuilt.

If we don't, the hurricanes win.

The question certainly can't be should we rebuild, because the location of New Orleans is why it exists. Of course we will rebuild, of course things should be elevated, however, we're talking an area that floods... most affluent people don't live in flood plains, this is a poor area. Unless we want to devote more money to rebuilding AND moving a sizable chunk of dirt from Texas there it won't happen. I feel bad for those people, but I'm not willing to spend more money on them. Are you conservatives really suggesting giving more to welfare through reconstruction and relief aid?

relief is not welfar...these people actually need it..but I did read an interesting piece suggesting that the fact that most of the people that stayed have been counting on the government to do everything for them their whole lives...so they have no idea how to take care of themselves and did not leave because no one paid them to leave...interesting take

often times in history massive destruction to a city is in the long run a good thing... take the london fire, the chicago fire, carpet bombing of essen in WW2. Its hardcore but its a lot like gardening, sometimes you have to clear out old outdated buildings on a massive scale... like weeds, to make room for new ones.
