What is the role of government

What is the role of government?

NASA unveiled its $104 billion plan on Monday to return Americans to the moon by 2018 aboard a capsule-like vehicle the space agency's chief described as "Apollo on steroids."
People are complaining saying that the government does not have enough money for all this stuff. My questions is: What should the government be spending the money on?
I believe the role of government is to do things that people can not do on their own, such as:
1. Military protection
2. Build roads
3. Provide schooling
4. Provide services like garbage removal and snow plowing
5. Provide clean drinking water

I’m sure there are more examples, and maybe people can list them.

But when the United States went to the moon before the Russians, America stood and cheered. People were proud of their country. This was around the time that JFK said: “Ask not what your country can do for you, but ask what you can do for your country.”

What happened to that thought? Besides the fact that many in this country bash it constantly and find joy in doing so, there are many who say…”We can’t go to space; we have to provide for our citizens.”
So to these people the role of government is to:
Provide free housing
free food
free health care
free schools, supplies, transportation, clothes and shoes

But aren’t these things that people are supposed to do for themselves?

Which way of thinking is correct?

Anymore it seems there are quite a few people believing the government is daddy big bucks, and is there to provide for them. I just got done reading some very despicable lefty blogs from Democrats. In short, they are rubbing their hands together with glee, thinking that this Katrina disaster is the way they will regain power. They are already talking about all the 'special programs' for 'special people' they will start up, once their poliical power is restored. They are essentially thanking 'their' God for the Katrina disaster, as they believe it will restore them to power. Some of them are even contemplating that an additional disaster from Rita will further their cause. Democrats...are they even human? For God's sake!

I think you should put some distinction into your word "government". Are we talking about the local government in New Orleans that ordered Red Cross trucks filled with food and water to stay away from the people who needed it? Is it the federal government that fills something as simple as a Highway Bill with 6,000 pork projects?

I think federal government should resemble a referee, involving itself in nation wide issues that require the resources of a nation: Military, Postal Service, Transportation. The progressive and liberal agenda that fills our lawbooks with filth and takes from our pockets for pet projects has just got to stop. How about a government reduction? Instead of reduicing the military because it's easy why don't we take some big steps and get rid of the welfare state we've created? The federal government should also be responsible for cleaning itself up.
