The politics of fat.

The thought police move to the oppression of fat people
story here

A few highlights:

In the war on fat, fat isn't just winning, it's crushing the opposition. A new study reports that in the course of a lifetime, 9 out of 10 men and 7 out of 10 women are going to become overweight.

Perhaps. What is clear is that not all fat citizens are obediently jumping on the diet bandwagon: A growing number are organizing to demand that society transform its bodily ideals, instead of agreeing that they should try to transform their bodies. The best-known of the fat activist groups is the National Association to Advance Fat Acceptance (NAAFA), but there are dozens of others, from the Fat Underground, which devotes itself to disrupting Weight Watchers meetings with pro-fat guerrilla theater, to rabble-rousing zines like Fat!So?, "for people who don't apologize for their size."

The origin question is important in the politics of fat because it shapes the approach to policy and advocacy issues. For instance, should the primary battle now be to ensure that obesity is included under the Americans with Disabilities Act?

So fat people are fighting back...they are tired of being treated differently...they want to be treated like everyboyd else....they even want special privilages....

Ummmm...you are stufing your face to the point of obesity. STOP EATING....

Of course, that is too hard, so fat people are banding together to force everyone to accept their fatness...I don't know, maybe workout and stop eating so much...that might be a better option.

If the left wasn't scurrying for all the 'special rights' groups votes they can get, I'm sure we would be reading headlines about how the terribly obese Americans could be feeding the entire hungry world's populations, if they would just give up their excessive eating, and send the money to special causes.
If all fat people were Republicans, I'm sure those headlines would be screaming at us day and night from every major liberal news site in the world.

This is more a personal responsibility issue...it shows that sometimes people shouldn't be tolerant...sometimes people should feel bad about what they have done...like being a big fat lazy slob, like having 4 kids by the time you are 20...maybe if people felt bad about doing bad things, they might not do them as much..

Understood. And I wholeheartedly agree. However, my above comment still holds true.

It is good to see people are not afraid to speak hard truths. Obesity is not a disease, it is a choice. But I must place the caveat that there are differing problems like Thyroid issues that could contribute to obesity.

That being said, all of the overweight people in American cannot have Thyroid problems. And I also beleive there is a difference between fat and fit. I have known a number of people that would be considered obese by standards and were clearly more fit than myself and my 165 pound frame.

Acceptance is not the answer, but instead offering a hand in helping them work there way out of the situation.

Excellent post, and I will try to check back more often.

thanks craig...I am a health teacher and a few of your points are valid...the scales for obesity are silly, especially if you are "fit" and have a little muscle...

I am talking about the lazy asses who are not wanting people to stop making fun of them...

Mark Maness...not to worry too much about that middle aged 'spread'. What I mean is don't obsess about beating yourself up over it. It happens to the best of us at a certain age. And if we are in sedentary work roles, it is even harder to combat the 'spread'. At least you are a decent, worthy, sincere, member of society. You are still miles ahead of lots of folks :)

Montana and California are tied in the middle, because there are so many Californians who moved to Montana within the last 15 years. Before that, native Montanans were quite fit.

Health people 2010 used to be healthy people 2000...we failed miserably on those goals as well, its kind of a joke...

No PE, no activity, more fast food...this isn't hard to figure out...this isn't some freak of nature...it is not a disease for most...
