Burmaster urges schools to drop Indian team names
Just a few samples of the story:
The state schools superintendent is calling on 39 school districts to shed their American Indian mascots, team names and logos on the grounds that they perpetuate stereotypes that distort students' understanding of history and culture.
Burmaster, a Democrat, says in her letter that she supported two identical bills in the Legislature that would force districts to prove their mascots did not promote discrimination and stereotyping if a district resident complained. If they could not, they would have to change their mascots within 12 months or face fines of up to $1,000 a day.
Carol Gunderson agreed. She and her husband, Harvey, have tried to get the Osseo-Fairchild School District to abandon the Chieftains team name.
"It is harming children - American Indian children, but white children, too, because it's teaching them it's OK to stereotype a whole race of people," she said.
Gunderson said the district's logo of an Indian wearing a headdress was offensive because eagle feathers are sacred items used ceremonially. Using that symbol is no different from plastering crosses and rosaries on football helmets, she said.
Four Osseo-Fairchild School Board members were recalled in 2002 after they voted to get rid of the logo. Their replacements reinstated it.
I would really be offended if teams all over the country wanted to use my likeness as a sign of strength, honor, courage and success. (that was sarcasm)
So when one whinny, bleeding heart, do gooder complains a whole community has to change. That is what PC does. A very small minority complain, and the majority suffers. It happens with the word God in schools and public places, Christmas, team names, ect...
The fact that makes this even more ridiculous is that most Native Americans do not want the names changed:
Poll Finds Native Americans Not Offended by Mascots
A poll published in the March 4 issue of Sports Illustrated suggests that the Indian team names so maligned by Native American activists are not nearly as offensive to the Native American community at large.
Asked if high school and college teams should stop using Indian nicknames, 81 percent of Native American respondents said no. As for pro sports, 83 percent of Native American respondents said teams should not stop using Indian nicknames, mascots, characters, and symbols. The poll also found that 75 percent of Native Americans don't think the use of these team names and mascots "contributes to discrimination."
So once again, white liberals need to change something that doesn't need to be changed. Make sure you change the Boston Celtics, the Notre Dame Fighting Irish, the Milwaukee Brewers, the New York Yankee's, the New York Mets, the Boston Red Sox, the Chicago White Sox, and any other team name that might be talking about any person. I guess we should just water down this issue like all others for liberals. We certainly can not hurt ANYONE'S feelings.
That is really what PC does. It makes even issue watered down. It forces people to do something they do not agree with or want to do.

We do have the highest bar per capita than any other large city in the country, and used to produce more beer over all. Its a good fit.
Hey Game, isnt Carthage one of the teams banned from competing in any NCAA playoffs or tourneys because they are the Redmen? Of course, the womens teams are the Lady Reds. Do they get fucked by this judgement, too?
I didn't hear that any Wis. teams were being punished for their team name...it doesn't seem like you agree with it Rhyno...
Thanks for the info steph...even though us here in Milwaukee take pride in our ability to drink. I am almost positive wisconsin drinks the most alcohol per capita...or atleast in the top three...and Milwaukee used to have the most bars per capita...they actualy have a law to stop more bars from being started

So, since I agree with Steph, can I please not be called a Liberal anymore?

Steph, about the institutionalized alcoholism on the reservations. I am part Native American, and I swear it doesnt mix well with my German tolerance. :) The only drunk in Milwaukee, anymore, is game. Thats only when Pat McCurdy is playing, too. Oh, Happy New Years folks.
