WB plays it cool in nervous world
In these edgy, post-9/11 times, how does a studio handle a movie featuring a terrorist-like hero who blows up the British Parliament building?
They call him a freedom fighter.
At least that's what Warners has decided to do with the futuristic "V for Vendetta," in which the central figure vows to do what Guy Fawkes couldn't in 1605 and blow up the Parliament building -- all to save the population from a hyperfascist government. "V" even wears a mask painted to look like Fawkes.
I was thinking about seeing this movie. However, after reading that the movie glorifies someone who blows up parliament, I have no desire to pay money to support that mind frame.
Do you think other people think that way? Do others care?
Sometimes a movie is so scary, or acted so well, or is so visually appealing, you can forget an offensive message. The fact that I might not have seen the movie anyway makes it easy to make this choice.
Also, in this story it talks about laws prohibiting the glorification of terrorism. Is that attacking freedom of speech? Should we want to see, or even allow movies that promote terrorism?
I say people have the right to make it, and we have the right not to see it.

You can bet that if it were a hypersocialist gubmint instead of a hyperfascist one, the Fawkes-like character would be painted in a far different light.
that was the second straw that did it in for me...why don't they just have GWB's face on the poster...
Wouldnt SOP be to see it, and then make up your own mind? Seriously, here...
No, you do have a point rhyno...I just have a bad feeling it will be a far left slanted movie...if that is true, I don't want to waste two hours and 9 dollars of my life...
And based on what the story said Roxy, it puts terrorism in a positive light because he is up against the evil far right
I'd like to say go see it and let me know...but you liked Matrix and Aeon Flux.
I always say to let someone give you enough rope to hang 'em with. Thats a colloquialism for the slower folks. If you think its going to suck, then see it so you can have that much more venom. :)
