Time Poll: Americans Back Border Fence, Deportations and Denying Benefits

Americans support building a security fence along the entire 2,000 mile U.S.- Mexican border by a landslide, a new Time magazine poll has found.

By a margin of 56 to 40 percent, respondents said they want the wall built from sea to shining sea - not just the 700 miles stipulated in the House plan, a proposal the press calls "draconian."
In more evidence that the American people want a tougher crackdown on illegal immigration than anything favored by Congress or the media, 62 percent told Time that they favored using the military to guard the border. Just 35 percent opposed.

But the poll's biggest shocker may be on the question of deporting illegals back to their native country, an option that politicians and the press say is out of the question.

And 51 percent said the U.S. would be "better of" if all illegals were deported and the border sealed to prevent any more from coming in. Just 38 percent disagreed.

A full 75 percent say illegals should be denied government supplied healthcare and food stamps, with 21 percent saying they should get those benefits. 69 percent say illegals shouldn't be allowed to get U.S. drivers licenses.

Why don't our Senators see this!!!!
Jim and Rhyno are in the minority. 75% of Americans agree with ME when I say illegals should not be taking the handouts the LEFT wants to give them.
People want the bill the RIGHT has passed in the house...
Let people protest. A vast majority of people do not agree with them.
Stand up for what is right.
We have already seen how amnesty does not work.
With all the negative stories about people in our own country hating America, its nice to see that there are still Americans who do not want this country to become Mexico...
This is AMERICA!!!!!! The greatest country in the world...
A country of laws
A country of LEGAL immigrants
Lets respect and honor all our relatives who came here, did the right thing, loved this country, tried to assimilate...
The people protesting, the people standing up for them, the congressmen who do not stick up for this country are WRONG.
I think of our ancestors and I am proud of them.
I feel sorry of people who watch these protestors hanging the American flag upside down, don't want to become American citizens, don't want to speak English, and think they are doing the right thing.
Luckily a majority have pride in this country....

Once again, you have misquoted or misread me. I never said illegals should get tax-subsidized assistance.

I like to throw you in with Jim since you disagree with me most of the time...

you are free to state your case here...

I said, if you build a fence, put it around Texas as a buffer. If you are going to repatriate, drop them off about 3 feet from Guatemala.

Oh, and I dont always disagree with you, just the reasoning.

I never said anything about giving anybody handouts (except the very richest and corporations getting handouts). I can't really remember anything I've written specifically supporting illegal aliens. I've only debunked some of the myths and bigotry you have tried to present as "facts" here.

So then tell me what you really think? What should we do?

These are obviously difficult issues. My thoughts are:

1. Protect the border. Unfortunately this will be difficult in terms of manpower and money due to the unfortunate location of our manpower and money in Iraq. I just don't see a wall. It makes us look like East Germany. Walls have never been effective. I think a "terrorist threat" is a non-issue here. Anybody can come over the Canadian border. Anybody can enter via the coastline if they really wanted to.

2. You can't arrest 12 million people. You can't deport 12 million people. You need to set up a process for documenting them. From what I know of Kennedy-McCain, that bill sounds like a reasonable mix of rule of law and compassion. Some people say it grants amnesty. I think that it does not. It requires payment of a fine like many other penalties for breaking the law, so it's not amnesty. It sets up a process with requirements that must be met in order to document them. It does not put them ahead of other documented immigrants in terms of citizenship. I suppose it puts them ahead in line of people OUTSIDE the country trying to immigrate legally. Well, I think that is a compromise that may be needed to move forward on this issue.

3. Stop threatening to deport or jail these people or separate them from their families. That's why you are getting hundreds of thousands of protestors.

4. Stop believing that any but a small radical few want to "take back" their country. It's a ludicrous idea.

5. Allow for a guest worker program so that people who come for work, can go back to their homes and return as labor needs and family needs require without fear of not being able to legally return. That way, laborors do not need to bring their entire families with them for seasonal work.

These are my thoughts.

hopefully you come back and read this:

I agree with some of it...

but I don't agree with the wall...yes, it might look bad, but I disagree when you say it is not effective...a properly constructed wall will drop the amount of illegal immigrants to about 0 in that area...

I understand that we probably can't get rid of all 12 million of these people...so I guess we have to do something...but what do we do to stop it from happening over and over again...

you do realize this same thing happened in 1986...

The wall is the best bet so far..

And about this fine...what happens when cry baby liberals start saying it is not fair to make them pay..you should not have to pay to be a citizen...they are too poor...what will you say then?

There will always be someone on either side of the debate who will complain about the last thing. How much they have to pay from the left. Why aren't they doing any jail time on the right. But a good, bi-partisan law will be supported by most people on both sides.

Seems to me there could be a high-tech solution with lasers, infrared equipment, satellites and rapid response units. People will tunnel under walls or scale them.
