America may be ready for a new political party.

All my adult life, people have been saying that the two-party system is ending, that the Democrats' and Republicans' control of political power in America is winding down. According to the traditional critique, the two parties no longer offer the people the choice they want and deserve. Sometimes it's said they are too much alike--Tweedledum and Tweedledee. Sometimes it's said they're too polarizing--too red and too blue for a nation in which many see things through purple glasses.

This week there was a small boomlet of talk about a new internet entity called Unity '08--a small collection of party veterans including moderate Democrats (former Carter aide Hamilton Jordan) and liberal-leaning Republicans (former Ford hand Doug Bailey) trying to join together with college students and broaden the options in the 2008 election. In terms of composition, Unity seems like the Concord Coalition, the bipartisan group (Warren Rudman, Bob Kerrey) that warns against high spending and deficits.

It is true that the two party system doesn't really serve anyone.
At the moment, the Democrats serve far left wing radicals, and the Republicans serve no one.
Really, there are 5 types of people. Liberals, Democrats, Republicans, Conservatives, and people who have no clue.

Of course, if this group did make a moderate Democrat party, it would ensure victory for the Right in 2008...right now there is no party for moderate Dem's.

However, when I saw the title I kind of hoped that it would be a conservative party.

Dont forget to eliminate all gun restrictions, property taxes, and police. Thats when you are REALLY Libertarian. I dont have much opinion on the property taxes, think carry/conceal is stupid inside any city limits, and the police shouldnt have any rights that arent extended to private citizens. And to think some people view us as an extension of the Pubs.

I have SOME libertarian leanings. You need to look at world political parties. You would find that what you call a Liberal in America(me for example)would be considered a moderate in any other democracy. The republicans serve the corporations and the democrats are a non opposition party. Except for a few like your honorable senator Feingold.I know youd like to get rid of him. I'll trade you. Domenici and Bingaman for Feingold. Anyday! I'll even throw in our congressman Pearce..PLEASE take that loser!

I am Libertarian all the way. Unfortunately, its all the nutjobs who get the press and votes because almost all of us ARE wackos. If people could be told what Libertarianism is, by someone other than a psycho, we could challenge either party with ease.

most people see your party as drug addicts who want all drugs legal OR people who want just about no govt whatsoever

if libertarians main platform was an actual limited govt, you would get a lot of conservatives

That's because of people's stereotypes due to lack of understanding of Libertarianism.

I'd be all for it, if it weren't for a few relatively minor things, and my daughter is a Libertarian, a path she chose to walk on her own.

Libertarians are very strong on responsibility -- so that frivolous (and sometimes more major) laws aren't necessary.

What is a Libertarian?
While libertarians are a diverse group of people with many philosophical starting points, they share a defining belief: that everyone should be free to do as they choose, so long as they don't infringe upon the equal freedom of others.

This is where responsibility comes in. Personal, and social responsibility.

The American Founders created a society based on the belief that human happiness is intimately connected with personal freedom and responsibility. The twin pillars of the system they created were limits on the power of the central government and protection of individual rights. . . .

Do some reading up before you judge.

There are many, many benefits to this type of society when you think about it.

Yes dedanna and that basic description of a Libertarian is where I fall in with them. I'm pro choice on everything.

Yep, it's called responsibility. It's up to all of us.
