Crack found in external tank foam

What is wrong with this story???
We could go to the moon in the 60's but not now?
Where was this "foam" then?
I read once it has to do with the fact we can't use asbestos anymore...
or maybe it's the "lowest bidder" policy...
Why are we getting worse at this?

My question is why there is always a crack found the day of the launch. Do they not find these ahead of time, or is it a coverup, or is it something else?

Well, we are working with equipment that is over twenty years old.

We could buy new equipment, but that costs a lot of money. Developing a new spaceship, like Al Gore's X-33, would cost even more resources. It is much cheaper to keep the current fleet and maintain it; it is also more dangerous.

Its also useless since it doesnt do anything but take up space.
