Clutching American flags and signs that read "America was formed by immigrants," more than 300 protesters on Saturday denounced a city proposal that would prohibit landlords from leasing to illegal immigrants.
This makes my head want to explode. They are ILLEGAL immigrants. Former immigrants wanted to be apart of this country and did it LEGALLY. There is no debate, no discussion. They are BREAKING THE LAW....PERIOD.
They should be able to get housing, in a jail cell, and that's it.

"They are BREAKING THE LAW....PERIOD."
Exactly. Perhaps we should start calling them crimmigrants.
Dude, if you think this country was on founded by legal immigrants, you are insane. Plus, a significant portion of the later immigrants were illegal, as well. Contrary to the scorp, it wasnt common for them to care to speak English. They left that for their children. The rest just moved into ethnic neighborhoods where the foreign language was common.

The FACT is my GRANDFATHER made sure he spoke his broken English in
public because the language of this
country that he chose for his family is English, and our Polish language and traditions would be continued at family events and gatherings.Contrary to this lack of
knowing anything about it,dude, all of the older LEGAL immigrants in my
neighborhood made sure they spoke their limited English in public. Now that's a fact-saw it every day.
rhyno, you don't have a clue...I'm going to believe someone who lived it over someone who read something from a liberal book or DailyKos
rhyno,
Say, DUDE. If you think that comparing the 1600's & 1700's to today is in any way relevant to the immigration situation, you're insane. You may recall from your basic history courses (I'm giving you the benefit of the doubt here), there were no immigration laws to break, & no welfare and civil services to take advantage of, just for starters. Nice try though.
Marshall, your grasp of right and wrong is severely limited. There isnt a 'it wasnt illegal then' concept to cling to until 1776. Thats when the country was founded. I doubt you knew that, so I am telling you. Almost none of those people were here with warrant.
Dear game and scorp, believe what you want, it doesnt make it correct. I have heard scorp's story at least a dozen times. I know that part is true. However, it doesnt mean that the rest of the country was the same way. Nor does it mean that every other immigrant group was the same way. nor does it mean every other neighborhood was the same way. If you believe limited anecdotal evidence over proven, cited and reinforced history, then you dont deserve the masters degree.
show me the evidence that large groups of immigrants came here illegally and never learned ANY english at all...there is a difference between being proud of your homeland and blatantly thumbing your nose at America...maybe you don't see the difference living in your "liberal"tarian world
I care not, conservative or liberal, you people know my take, and I've seen scorp's story on this over and over again in my lifetime, now being almost 50 (that's half a century).
In my day, the border patrol got up off their asses and sent illegals that they found back to their originating country, a process called deportation. The cost of this process, border patrol's paychecks, etc. were taken out of tax dollars. Border patrol also made rounds to all of the immigrants, to be sure that they had their green cards up to date, and to make sure that they were adhering to the laws they were supposed to. If they weren't, they were sent back. Yes, a few illegal immigrants fell through the cracks, but for the majority, they were caught and sent home, and if they came back too many times, they were jailed, and they stayed there.
Now, I'd like to know what the hell happened to that? Well, border patrol agents, as time went on, began accepting bribes to turn their heads, and got lax themselves on their jobs.
Per law, people, these illegals are not supposed to be here, and the border patrol agents who accept the bribes, or who are lax on the job should be fired and sent their merry way. The illegals shouldn't be given anything, because they should be deported on site, or, as game correctly puts it, jailed. I'm damned sure not willing to support them, when the people who are trying to get here legally are being given so much hell to do so. It's a very, very costly and timely process, and it's one that is speeded up, btw, for our neighbors down south. Bullshit if you ask me. Bullshit, bullshit, bullshit. Who cares if history says that's how it was done then or not. We should care about now, and now we have laws against this that are not being enforced, and haven't been for a while when they should have been.

Being that I was playing three sports during this period of ANCIENT history and traveling with my teammates all over town to play
against competition of ALL etnic
languages and backgrounds I can ACCURATELY state that the adults who watched us play, welcomed us into their stores, shops, restaurants
and HOMES did communicate with us using English in all conversations
even with their own family members.
It didn't matter if young or old-
we spoke English in public places.
This INCLUDED my dozen or so Hispanic teammates and friends who
also conversed in English with us.
This was all neighborhood playgrounds, everywhere. No one was
locked and grouped by language,as your fantasy suggests.Maybe you needed to be there to see what these LEGAL city residents were trying hard to accomplish.
Amen.
I grew up in multicultural so. cal. ... scorp is right. There was no need to have spanish, or any other language as a second language. Everyone spoke English. It was aspired at the time by most immigrants to do so. It was part of the "dream" so to speak.
My great-grandmother immigrated from Switzerland when she was pregnant with my grandmother. My grandmother was raised to speak english at all times, and they were all welcome. Here again, though, they did it legally.
The legals have a lot more respect from me for their traditions than the illegals do any day of the week.
rhyno,
" There isnt a 'it wasnt illegal then' concept to cling to until 1776." Isn't that kinda like what I said? I'm trying to find when the first law restricting immigration was enacted. Haven't found it yet. The founders were not, as you've seemed to agree, working under such laws. If you are somehow speaking of Europeans "invading" the sovereign state of some indiginous peoples, I doubt they had restrictions on immigration either. (Of course, I'm sure they wouldn't have appreciated anyone setting up a tent in the middle of their Indian village, but that's not the same)
Well, the example of my own family was the late 1800s.
