Well, it looks like Republicans just lost the House.
They would cut their loses in half instantly if they went on an attack of illegal immigration and talked about border security. Its worth 5-10 points in every race.

According to that article, I would say there is a better angle. They will lose because they are focusing on an issue that is weak or dead to all but the people who already support it. Every way they can come at national security can be countered by most opponents. If they would have used immigration, I believe you game, this election wouldnt end up being such a washout. I use, as example, the labor groups refusing to march in the labor day parade because of it being combined with the immigrants rights parade.

But that's exactly how issues get swept under the rug, is by using other issues to drown them out. A tactic used every day by the most regular of human beings.
The immigration issue is one that the House is saying, "we give up, we can't find a solution", when they think they have the answer to everyone else's.
Here again, what about the U.S.? Why sweep the U.S. issues under the rug? What, we can solve all the other countries problems, but not a simple immigration issue in the U.S.? This is a huge issue, one too big to sweep away.

It sucks indeed, but isn't it just a matter of shelving it until after Nov since there's too much disagreement on tactics to solve it by then? Nobody wants to sign on to a flawed piece of legislation, and exactly which side should we expect will give in to get anything done? Neither the House nor the Senate bills are likely to get enough support for passage, so with this current "Mexican standoff", the better part of valor may be to retool and hit it again later. Just a thought.
I agree with Marshall completely. The Dems are holding all of the cards on immigration, so we have to punt.
I don't give a damn who holds the cards on this. It's something that needs to be dealt with, harshly, and SOON.
Somebody has to have the balls to stand up and do what's right. They need to get to it.
There's no disagreement there, dedanna, only in whether there's enough of 'em to make it happen. There have been a few who have been vocal and hardworking regarding this issue, but a few can't get anything passed. That's the problem. The constituency needs to be more active in calling, writing, emailing in order for the lot of 'em to get the message. And how many of the public will do even that?

A good reason Bush does not want to secure the border with Mexico may be that the administration is trying to create express lanes for Mexican trucks to bring containers with cheap Far East goods into the heart of the U.S., all without the involvement of any U.S. union workers on the docks or in the trucks.

We'll get just enough deportions to worsen the jobs situation in Mexico, no development/infrastructure aid for Mexico to handle their urbanization process(which is a major reason for Mexican emmigration), massive guest worker visa increases that will be used largely by non-Hispanics, and legislation that criminalizes a lot of Americans practicing their profession.
