Democrats, who won control of the U.S. Congress, said on Sunday they will push for a phased withdrawal of American troops from Iraq to begin in four to six months, but the White House cautioned against fixing timetables.
So what does this mean for politics, the country and the world

It means that those Democrats understand why the American people voted for them last week.
If your policy is "as the Iraqi military stands up, we will stand down", and the Iraqi military stands up 300,000 troops and the US stands down none, there is a disconnect here. The Iraqi army's 300,000 needs to learn to stand on their own. If we continue to stay at current troop levels, they have no incentive to stand on their own.
Security should be their responsibility. If they can't provide it with 300,000 troops, why should our troops have to stay?
The DEFEATocrats are cutting and running, AND are TOO COWARDLY to admit it.
we have to see what the plan is...I'll be intellectually honest...IF the plan had it built in that the iraqi troops had to be ready first, it wouldn't be a bad plan
Agreed in principle, Game, but what if Iraq takes 10 years for the troops to be ready? Do we "babysit" them for 5 years? 10 years? How long?
The thing is, do you believe Iraq will ever be secure without a political solution to the current situation? If Sunnis, Shiites, and Kurds cannot find a way to peacefully co-exist, and if Iraq's neighbors refuse to support a political solution, what good will the US military be in the region unless we make an overwhelming and enduring military commitment to the entire region for years? Like half a million troops (where do we get them?) for 5-10 years.
Or is that what the administration had in mind to begin with?
My dad and grandfather use to train horses. The were opposed to the idea of "wrapping" a horses ankles. Their theory was that doing this made them soft and didn't give them a chance to toughen up on their own.
That's a nice story, Ron.
The incentive for the Iraqi people and military is that they don't want to live under babysitters. According to those who are there, there is constant progress (albeit not as quickly as the lefty whiners would prefer) that has been described in recent comments. The goals are being met. The support needs to stay in place until the are totally achieved, otherwise the image of America been a country upon whom no one can count will be solidified. The Dems, who are stupid, need to stand down and let the adults finish the job. If the plan is as Game hopes, then it is what is already in place. BTW, the Dems DON'T understand why they won.
Jeez, I need to proof read my stuff.
the answer is not simple Jim...
a part of me does think that the only way to keep those group of people together is to have a hard core government....or let them break up into two or three countries...
That worked so well in the Baltics.
First you can't foist any of this off on the Dems. George is still and for 2 more years will be the commander and chief and has the option to ignore anything he wants just like he has been doing. 2nd..the arab league needs to be involved in this. An Arab solution is the only one that will be accepted and will get the rest of the region involved in the solution. If they don't get involved they stand to inherit the same problems in their country.
