Fla. Fraternity Shut After Hazing Claims

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) -- One of University of Central Florida's oldest fraternities has been disbanded by its national headquarters following allegations of hazing involving heavy drinking and pledges wearing women's underwear.

What do you think of frats?
Should they be allowed to be tough on pledges?
Does it show a level of commitment?
Is it cruel?
Do frats have a purpose?
Are they just a waste of time?

I'm not a fan of Frats, but that hazing sounds like a normal Saturday night to me. ;)

Back when I was in college they didn't have the same problem with heavy drinking they do now. Probably because the frats were buying herb by the pound for collective consumption.

That's the trouble with tribbles, triticale.

I went to college in a place at a time when frats were not very popular. Greek freaks.

I never had anything in particular against them. They employed my band for parties.

Frats I believe are good for making life-long friendships and networks for business and social contacts.

Hazing serves no positive purpose that I can see. I think it is perpetual payback. The upperclass is getting even for the humliation once served to them. This is sill of course because they can never actually get revenge against those who actually did it to them.

A little embarassment is OK, but humiliation or physical endangerment is not OK.

Was Mark Foley put in charge of Florida frats? I hear he's into a special type of hazing:)

If they join of their own free will, they can leave anytime. I dont know anything about their program, but simple hazing isnt a threat to anyone but the pride of the stupid school administrators who jump over the threat of lawsuits every time someone has their feelings hurt. As someone else said, what they were doing wasnt too far from what everyone else was doing anyway.

First time I totally agreed with Jim...I was in a frat, and I always felt so sorry for people who were not involved in greek life...sitting in their dorm room doing the same boring stuff. Every single fond memory I have about college comes from my frat.
It was mostly about hanging out, being apart of something, building bonds, and lots of girls and drinking...
But there is something to say about being apart of an organization that has to work together even though there are many different types of people...there are lots of people in my frat I would have never hung out with, but in a way was forced to, and I am a better person because of it.
There is much more I could say about it, but I have to teach soon..

Fraternities help build life long relationships. They do much more for their members than to teach them to drink and act silly.

The purpose of a college fraternity is not to capture awards or trophies but secure a true brotherhood of men and these things will follow...

As a former sorority girl who spent her fair share of time at frat houses...I agree with what Game & Rhyno said. Greek life is totally optional - you don't like it, or can't take it, the door's open.
