I'm not sure what to think. I am open to arguments on both sides before I could make a decision.
It's absolutely awful that such measures are deemed necessary in any school in this country. Obviously, the situation has deteriorated to the point where extreme measure must be taken. If violence has gotten out of hand, then I have to back these types of options. It's a band-aid fix because it's only dealing with symptoms of a deeper issue, which is the lack of respect for other human beings by the students who commit violent acts in school. This lack of respect is allowed by the parent(s) of the kids and between the two, there needs to be some hard core stop gap measures that will convince both of the need to comply with standards of behavior that is beneficial to all of the students and community.
This is a tall order considering how we are often reminded that you can't legislate morality. Thus, how can we legally insist on any behavior?
But in the meantime, here's an excellent opportunity for all those who think we can turn the tide in the Middle East by diplomacy and negotiation. Save plane fare and travel to the cities that suffer from the same terrorism under which these schools exist. If your methods convince the gang bangers and banger wannabees to change their ways, I might be convinced that it will work for the Islamic terrorists.
Scorpion says---
This is only another attempt to
curb the attitudes and actions that are brought into school every day.Is it the answer to the problem? No.Might it help? We will have to see if enough money is available to keep the program in place long enough to see if this truly makes a difference.
Very good points made...
Inner city schools are a relection of the community the students come from. There is no respect for authority, society, or even human life. Adding a cop doesn't fix that, and I don't even think it will solve the problem in the school building.
And Marshall's point about being nice to the gang bangers like we are supposed to be to terrorist in the middle east is valid...
We JUST had some idiot come into our building and tell us that the reason the kids assault and battery teachers is because we do not show enough love to them...
I almost jumped out of my seat and showed this idiot some tough love....
Of course, being nice and pleasant can help, but the problem is not that teachers are not nice enough, or that there are not enough police...its the community...
No matter where you are, if the people do not have respect for the rule of law, it is impossible to keep control. In a majority of MPS buildings there is no control...some liberal brainwashed teachers might argue otherwise, and then I would invite any of you to come to my school and see if you think it is under control...I am confident you will be shocked...
Cops can not be everywhere all day, and this will be another measure trying to stop the symptoms of a bigger problem that might never be addressed.
The first real step should be proper punishment for students...we do not have that at our school, and probably most others as well
Marshall
Good points, and a great challenge: “If your methods convince the gang bangers and banger wannabees to change their ways, I might be convinced that it will work for the Islamic terrorists.”
The only problem (as you well know) is that success or failure matters not with so-called progressives, it’s only the “purity” of their ideas that have any significance. The examples are legion.
The “progs” not only don’t care if their ideas are successful, they blame others for the failures of their inane policies:
“Socialism has always failed, not because of human nature, but because it wasn’t implemented properly.”
“The war on poverty hasn’t worked, not because we have created a dependency class, but because we haven’t raised taxes enough.”
“Kumbaya diplomacy hasn’t worked, not because viscous thugs and murderers can’t be reasoned with, but because mean ole’ neocon’s are just greedy bastards that want to rule the world and have pissed everybody off.”
Progressives have defined the terms of the debate so that all their many failures can be blamed on conservatives, or because the solution wasn’t liberal enough. And they think most Americans are to stupid to realize what they’re doing. That remains to be seen.
The schools won't be fixed until parents start raising their little hellions properly AND allow principals and teachers to bust a little ass and/or kick out the troublemakers.
PERFECT!!!
Still haven't heard both sides..only one.
What's the other side, Ron? That there should be no police presence in a school where punks seek to rule? It would seem that no matter what the plan for the underlying causes may be, protecting the teachers and students from the assholes is paramount.
Yes, marshall I am looking for any other possible solutions to the problem. Actually I tend to agree with you but I want to here about other methods of providing security. There are some out there but not knowing as much as I could I couldn't make a good argument for them. I want to hear someone do that. I want all the best ideas and then make up my mind on what the best solution is. I don't know enough about this problem to make an informed decision..only one that may be an "emotional" response. I have a feeling that a combination of ideas will produce the best, in terms of security and necessary invasion, answer.
Nothing wrong with looking at all possible solutions before making up your mind. Just realize that the people in charge of the schools systems, for the most part, have looked at many ideas. And although many of these people “in charge” are certainly agenda driven, and seem to be mentally challenged, there are many that have the best interest of the children in mind.
The problem is, without looking at the root causes of our sick, you might say, almost terminally ill culture, anything we try is merely a stopgap measure.
It's also helpful to remember that while one is looking at options, there is still an immediate need. The cops will provide for that while the debate rages, and hopefully teachers and students will be safer in the meantime.
