Democrats to Gut Missile Defense / Bush to Announce "Orbital Battle Station"

Well done America!!!!
I am going to have to pay for your ignorance in November....maybe by being blown up...
Not because the missile defense system would have ever worked 100%, but because with Dem's in charge, the rest of the bad guys see us getting weaker and weaker....eventually they will strike again...

You're joking, right? The bad guys will laugh at us for spending trillions of dollars on a missile defense system while we leave the ports, chemical plants, our water supplies, and nuclear energy plants unguarded and vulnerable.

It's one thing to spend a few billion dollars on stealth aircraft which may be effective for awhile until the enemy figures out a way through the stealth capability. But spend a trillion? When they figure out how to use decoys and multiple warheads and other counter measures, we've spent a trillion dollars for what? While we can't spend the money to rebuild and strengthen levees and bridges? While we don't have the money to properly enforce immigration laws? While we don't have the money to educate our future problem solvers and wage earners? While we give Paris Hilton her untouched inheritance?

But wow, it'll sure be cool!

"YOU" aren't giving anyone their inheritance, unless you're leaving your chump change to your kids. Her inheritance is none of your business.

And gosh, if we aren't smart enough to design a functional missile defense system, what makes you thing we're smart enough for all those alternative uses of the money?

It is small minded thinking like Jim's that puts America at risk. The top priority of this govt is to protect us. In the 1980's Reagan built up our nuclear weapons....why?
A deterant...we need to SEEM like the strongest country, the country that will destroy anyone who MIGHT even THINK about attacking us...It has been proven 9-11 happened because Osama thought we were weak and would fold...and if a Democrat was still in office he would have been correct.
While liberals like jim worry about how the govt is going to take care of everyone who can't take care of themselves (which grows daily because of liberal programs and philosophy), the bad guys of the world are being convinced by listening to American liberals that we are weak and can be beaten

I agree with Jim on this one. About the part of missile defense being a pork barrel government program with no prospect of ever working, not that we need to funnel money into other government programs with no prospect of working. We don't need more construction in Chicago. Please. We really don't. Please. You're killing us with kindness. Good roads don't need to be torn up all of the time so hardhats and their bosses can keep their jobs. With education, while Bush has increased defense spending 47%, he has increased higher education spending 133%. Yet we continue to get substandard results, costs continue to spiral out of control, and no one understands the connection.

Okay, back to missile defense.

An ICBM from the Ural mountains can hit the United States in 20 minutes; by the time we detect one of these things incoming, it is like trying to hit a bullet with a bullet. If we did have the system in place, the enemy can get around it with far, far cheaper countermeasures -- blowing up a nuke in a port, smuggling them across the border and detonating them in our cities, swamping the missile defense system with hundreds of nukes, building decoys into the incoming rockets, radar jamming, firing nukes from offshore submarines-- missle defense is simply is not worth the investment. Missile defense is a big joke among physicists-- they'll be building a high powered laser for example or exploring a new semiconductor and joke and grumble about how their projects have an infinitely better chance of working than missile defense ever will.

If we're worried about other countries developing nukes, we need to take out their development programs, unilaterally if necessary. A missile defense system is not going to save us.

That's very true. Look at the now-defunkt Star Wars system. While pretty to look at, it didn't do anywhere near what they needed it to.

I say defunkt -- it's still going, but pretty much in name only; i.e. it's still "there", but not doing anything.

We need real border patrol; we need a real missile defense system. This country has been very bad on national security (things like this) for far too long, to where most think it's non-existent. We need something that works.

Jason, we are DEFINITELY of the same mind on missile defense. (Imagine that!) Well-stated examples of why.

I've heard more promising talk about missile defense than presented here. Would entertain links to either side of the issue. I would also say that there is an aspect that has a real impact on the situation, and that is that the money spent by our foes in trying to get around our systems drains them of their finances. Eventually, like Russia, they end up spending a damaging percentage of their budgets on keeping up with us. So if they were to inundate us with missiles and decoys and such, what would they have in reserve? I'm speaking in general terms here. As to how quickly a launched missile would hit a target, it's my understanding that the Star Wars concept is predicated on detecting the moment of launch and sending an immediate response. Considering what they've accomplished with smart bombs and laser guidance and all, why does it seem so impossible that such defense systems would work? And as to other scenarios aside from a launch, do you honestly believe that there is no work covering those possibilities? Do you all have such little faith in everyone involved with such matters? At this stage of the game (no pun intended), defense and security is, or should be, the paramount concern of the federal government. If there's any re-deploying to be done, it should be the re-deployment of funds to defense and security.

I just find it interesting that the radical right justifies everything these days with the WE ARE ALL GONNA DIE! mantra. Like anything other than what they want will drive us to oblivion.

Most of the folks here must have missed the air raid drills of the 50s and early 60s. How in the world did we make it through those days of bomb shelters, fear of fallout, nuclear winter?

Ron, they call us weak, but I think we can call then scared, don't ya think?

ron, jim--

There is a difference between the Revolutionary Islamists and the socialists, national socialist and bolshevik alike. Hitler and Stalin alike were fighting on the principle of common good over individual good, and weren't suicidal. As a result, mutually assured destruction worked as a deterrent against socialist states in the late 1900s.

Revolutionary Islamism is a different creature. One, if we disengage from the world Gandhi style in a meditative state, there is not the potential for two or three fascist countries, but fifteen to twenty. Moreover, when the Revolution does succeed, as in Iran's case, the apocalypse and mutually assured destruction is their publically stated GOAL. And as their Iran-Iraq war illustrated, the fundies had no problem killing millions of their own people in insane cleric-led human wave attacks through Saddam's minefields to export their religious crusade.

This is frightening stuff, and if it doesn't scare you, you're either not paying attention, or you're a robot.

The left likes to think mankind is one big happy family, and that there is no prospect for mass destruction in the United States because of the following. The cult of multiculturalism has deemed it a sin to force your principles on other people, no matter how superior they are. Secondly, they see the United States as omnipotent-- we are the cause of all evil in the world, hence the lack of surprise and astonishment when a bunch of college students fly airplanes into our skyscrapers. It had to happen, since we're so bad, and if we would start being compassionate and caring, the people who are racking up body counts in the MILLIONS in places like the Sudan will never attack the Great Satan again.

People called Churchill a paranoid warmonger when he said that Hitler and Mussolini were dangerous and needed to be dealt with. We chose diplomacy and appeasement, and everyone knows the rest of the story. As Santayana once wrote in a well worn phrase, those who do not learn the lessons of history are doomed to repeat them.

Quick way to settle this argument, PUT YOUR LIFE ON THE LINE.

If N. Korea or Iran nukes us with a missle, then all those loud mouths who didn't want a missle defense should be killed without official sanction.

Dedanna said...

I'm not saying I don't want one; I'm saying I do. One that works, and the one in place doesn't.
