Here is another story showing how things that sound good usually end up causing many more problems than they solve.
We don't want to drill in the middle of nowhere, or the gulf, or anywhere....so we decide to use corn...
People in our government say free flu shots for all kids and forced lower prescription drug prices....That causes drug companies to stop making the drugs that they are forced to sell for less money and hurt people looking for new medicine. Usually the simple government answer doesn't work...
We can get into all the failed liberal social programs like welfare and the projects, but we already know those are failures.

Fuel for car may be food for trouble

I hears that Ethanol is more expensive to produce than Gasoline, so, in reality, it is not an answer to rising fuel prices, but rather, will cause prices to rise.
Yes, and the problem is that conservatives seem to be pushing this because they are too whimpy to fight environmentalist whackos on drilling.
I've always believed we should be moving from gasoline to alcohol for internal combustion engines.
I don't believe the Government should be scaring off private companies who want to convert older vehicles to use E85.
This is much bigger than Liberal Vs Conservative debate. With only limited supply of oil and the dependency on a ‘friendly’ region that comes along with it, it’s only logical to find other sources of energy.
And, we can’t expect to find a perfect solution only when the oil prices hit $80 a barrel and forget all about it when it drops to $50. It has to be a long-term vision with a clear goal.
very easy....
stop making our country weak by not allowing us to use our natural resources...we wouldn't even be a super power right now if we had environmentalist ruining things back in the day...
We drill now, and keep trying to come up with news ways to get energy...but really try, not what we are doing now
Well said, vittal!
Wow, I'm up in the middle of the night and I think I am dreaming. pcd makes perfect sense to me! Vittal too! Of course Game wants to continue on our status quo even if it has unintended consequences just like he accused liberals of in a post above this one. Like raping the environment and helping delay the eventual move, which could result in not enough energy if a disaster larger than the one we have now strikes the Mideast. Sorry Game we can't drill our way out of this problem we don't have enough oil to do it even if we tried. The time for thinking about new ideas was over a long time ago. It is time for action now. It is a national emergency.
Take it easy, Ron. Games's point is valid. Drill now, because we can and should've been anyway, AND seek new energy sources. Each new well drilled, each new reserve tapped, is another step away from foreign dependence. There's very little in the way of "raping" the environment since they know where the oil is and how to get it. In any case, it's only one step, but a step that should be taken.
In addition, the cost to consumers is paramount as well. We need to do away with this idea of different blends for different regions of the country due to stupid environmental laws of said regions. One blend for the entire country would reduce refining costs.
All options for alternatives need to be on the table and actually considered, rather than dismissed out of knee-jerk concerns. This means nuclear power as a potential alternative. Above all else is the need for serious and objective searches for alternatives. Something that actually has a chance of working rather than pie-in-the-sky environmental crappola that results in products no one will buy and regulations that choke the economy.
So we need to use what we have and do so completely (drilling, new refineries, one blend), while seriously searching for those alternatives that will actually be a benefit to society. The need for oil will be around for quite awhile, unless some Gore-ish nincompoops outlaw its use. While that is the case, drilling is a must.
ron must not be able to understand entire sentences. This makes sense to me:
We drill now, and keep trying to come up with news ways to get energy...but really try, not what we are doing now
