In the sky! A bird? A plane? A ... UFO?

Is it possible?
Why not?
Who is to say there are other life forms somewhere smarter than us?

Yes it's possible. Smarter than us? Setting the bar pretty low. :-)

I find it curious that some would have us believe that we are NOT smarter than potential visitors from outer space. If one considers the vast amount of knowledge our kind has accumulated, I defy anyone to name that individual who contains it all. Thus, it would not be the amount of knowledge that would impress; the visitor may have started sooner in gaining the knowledge that results in space travel. Rather, how would any advances in common sense be made manifest? What could they tell us or show us that would demonstrate that they have transcended those base qualities that have so confounded any real attempts at global understanding and fellowship? We may indeed find that their advanced technical knowledge is the means by which they visit their own selfish or malevolent plans upon us. Such advances may have had absolutely no impact on their character other than to make it easier to indulge themselves.

But this is typical for some. Alien visitors, primitive peoples, anywhere not yet sullied by the footsteps of western man just has to be better, more idyllic, than anything we could possibly offer. I crap on this self-abusing line of reasoning.

As to the question at hand, I'm not yet ready to give in to the hope for life elsewhere in the universe. There's been nothing that has been shown to be solid in the way of proof. Nothing but speculation. This isn't to say that I don't believe there can be, just that I don't believe there's been any reasonable argument to say there is. Frankly, if there's anything out there, I'd much prefer to know ASAP. But the idea that they've been seen (supposedly) so many times, yet refuse to make contact just doesn't make sense. If they're smarter than us, as some believe must be the case, the countless claims of sightings would bring that into question. Why expose themselves without contacting us? Aren't they smart enough to protect themselves from us? Or to make contact without negative repurcussions?

Possible? What isn't? Likely? Not so much. Smarter than us? Yeah. Sure.

Sure there can be something besides this circus called Earth.
Smarter? How could it not be?
