I guess I don't understand this one at all.
If there is a vaccine that will prevent a disease that can lead to cancer, why would you not get it?
Because the word sex is involved?
Now, if the vaccine is not 100% tested yet, and there are still concerns about that, then I understand.
But other than that, I don't get it.
Is this the same stupid argument that if you teach kids about sex and contraceptives they will want to have more sex?...if they get this shot they will run out and have sex?
Someone clue me in.
Why would someone NOT give someone a vaccine that protects their daughter?
We don't do it with any other shot...

Parents, politicians spar over vaccine

This is just another case of Schoolies thinking they can use the government to dictate to parents. I want less government, not more.
And HPV is something you generally get from being a ho. Why not teach abstinence in a sustained fashion and challenge the new assumptions promoted by hollywood, academics, and the media? Someone has to do it, and it would help if schools sided with parents for a change.
Even on grounds of utility the Schoolie argument fails. The irony is that if sex education really worked, there would be no need for this vaccine. Proponents of sex education, like drug education, never reflect that their programs cause rseults opposite of their noble intentions.
sorry jason, that is not true...
many women get HPV and they are not sleeping around...it happens and we can help to protect women..
See, you are letting the sex aspect get in the way instead of just using common sense...
This expensive vaccine is being pushed on women by an aggressive drug company seeking to pad their bank accounts by "preventing" a disease that is already highly treatable in the targeted population. Since is does not eliminate the need for regular pap smears, wouldn't the most effective first course of action be to make regular gynecological care available to women regardless of income or health insurance?
This is a very new drug with no history. We have been assured it's safe, but didn't the same assurances come with DES and HRT? I would not want my daughter to be a guinea pig for a drug company that used questionable clinical practices in the studies of this vaccine. Also, Merck’s own literature states that Gardasil, “has not been evaluated for the potential to cause carcinogenicity or genotoxicity.” Is that the sort of thing you want to inject into your kid? Thanks, but no thanks.
I dealt with that issue at some length of how sexual politics is trumping good science, and how Merck has been promoting mandatory vaccination language around the country.

You'll want to read the comments, too, as the first comment provides some excellent information.
Even those of us who have traditionally supported the rights of pharmaceutical companies should be a little disturbed by the behavior of Merck.
I checked out the info at Wigderson's. It supports other things I've heard regarding the drug, HPV and the repurcusions. Definitely not enough there to force this crap upon my daughter. From what I've heard, there are far more than the four strains described in the comments at Wiggy's, but the vaccine only shows any results, such as they are, on those. The other variations are still capable of causing problems, yet the vaccine doesn't protect against them. I won't allow my child to be a guinea pig for anyone. Plus, if she is raised properly, she's not likely to contract HPV anyhow.
like I said, if the drug still has some trouble...then no one should HAVE to take it...but be careful with the attitude that only whores get HPV
"but be careful with the attitude that only whores get HPV"
I'll be careful.
Only those who engage in recreational sex, or who have partners who have engaged in recreational sex, will acquire the sexually transmitted disease through genital contact.
Or to use the traditional language and to obviate this grotesque PC charade: only whores get HPV.

If the people don’t have the right to rut in the ditches like dogs in heat, and have the gubmint fix the consequences of said actions, what kind of damn country is this?
