The nation's budget deficit will drop to $205 billion in the fiscal year that ends in September, less than half of what it was at its peak in 2004, according to new White House estimates.
President Bush planned to discuss the figures in an afternoon appearance.
The new figure is considerably smaller than original estimates. In February, the White House predicted that this year's deficit would be $244 billion because of stronger-than-expected revenue collections. The deficit hit a peak of $413 billion in 2004 and was $248 billion last year.
How can more taxes be taken in, when we had tax cuts?

Game,
You'll have the libs do everything but admit that Tax and Spend is wrong. They can't admit the truth.
Dingell can come up with new taxes. Doyle can tax businesses out of Wisconsin, but they will never admit it.
How can more taxes be taken in, when we had tax cuts?
There are more people paying taxes today.
lol...ya, more people paying taxes because more people have jobs because taxes were cut and companies had more money to hire people because more people had more money and bought more stuff...the end
My God man. You guys believe everything you read don't you? Do you know that they don't include the Iraq war in the overall budget process? That is why it comes up separately every time. That's a about 2 million a week that aren't included in your numbers. Do you know that accounting methods can make a difference in how the numbers come out? Do you know that individual citizens are going bankrupt at a higher rate than ever? Do you know that people have more credit card debt than ever? I know that is nothing to do with tax reciepts but you are apparently trying to say the economy is smokin and you are dead wrong. How could you possibily belive that our country is getting richer when we(the government) are borrowing more than ever? It doesn't add up! PCD can't handle the truth! Anything liberal drives him nuts. It's kinda funny and sad at the same time.
The End
Excuse me that's 2 BILLION a week!
2 Billon!
Estimates, huh?
I believe I'll withhold judgement until the real numbers are out.
Ron--
What is ultimately going to kill the budget in the near future is runaway entitlement spending. There are about 76 million baby boomers that will begin to retire in swarms in just a few years.
Of course, they want to raise taxes on everyone to pay for it. But borrowing extra for a few years to help moderates and secularists in Iraq-- that apparently is a no-no to the hippie left. Which strikes me as a bit selfish -- spend more of other people's money on me me me, screw everyone else. What gives?
"But borrowing extra for a few years to help moderates and secularists in Iraq-"
Not under a Republican or neocon-influenced Democratic administration. Sorry.
You take care of your own people first.
Besides, thanks to the war, our alliances with evil, and our unfailing ability to foul everything we touch, there ARE no longer "moderates and secularists" in Iraq.
Iraq has Saudi Arabia and the UAE to fall back on. It's not WE, THE PEOPLE's fault that you were too cheap at the onset to establish a Marshall Plan for Iraq when we could have made a positive difference. Now, thanks to you, it's too late for that, so stop picking OUR pockets to stave off dark forces YOU created.
And most Americans feel this way. Trust me, it's just a gut feeling I have....
"You take care of your own people first."
This is why I left the Democratic Party. You guys have gone Pat Buchanan on me.
This is why I left the Democratic Party. You guys have gone Pat Buchanan on me.
Well, but look. I'm not denying that we have a humanitarian obligation to people around the world, where we can help; but when we're talking about people with their own country and their own elected leaders, isn't there some point where its time for them to take responsibility for their own lives and nation?
Isn't that what conservatives are about? Personal responsibility? How about the Iraqis taking a little personal responsibility for their country? Pat Buchanan is still a Republican, by the way.
