MAIN STAGE REVIEW:
Summerfest house band, The BoDeans, was in marathon mode during their first appearance at the Wisconsin State Fair. I had low expectations of The BoDeans coming into the show, but I have to admit they sounded pretty good. I don't think they needed each song to turn into a 9 minute jam session, but I'm sure if you like the sound of the BoDeans you didn't mind. I'm not sure how many of these songs are actually hits outside of Milwaukee, but they played five songs I recognized: Hold you Tonight, Naked, Closer to Free, Runaway and Pass me By. They sure had a good time and the 4950 die hards in attendance seemed to know every word to every song.
I was excited to see the opening band, The Gufs. This is a band that someone got looked over by the national record execs. I have no idea why they didn't make it big. They sang Crash into Me and Smile, the two "hits" if you live in the Milwaukee area. Sad to say, they did not sound very good tonight, especially when you compare them to the crisp, clean sound of the BoDeans.
In other news, Bennos and the rest of the Fair was alive with energy Friday night. Thousands of people were still having a good time after the midnight "close." Getting a chance to have a few at Bennos, and watching everyone else have a good time reminds you why the State Fair is the best time of the Summer.
