Energy-saving devices called so dangerous everyone must leave for at least 15 minutes
Thomas Edison must be rolling over in his grave.
Less than a month after the U.S. Congress passed an energy bill banning the incandescent light bulb by 2014, the UK Environment Agency issued guidelines calling for evacuation of any room where an energy-saving compact fluorescent light bulb is broken, releasing toxic mercury.
Well done environmentalist wackos. Who cares about people as long as we STOP GLOBAL WARMING!!!!!

game, this is bullshit, because I myself broke one of those bulbs a few months ago, and hardly any mercury, or anything else, was in it
you just clean it up like any other bulb
what is far more relevant (and dangerous) is the number of mercury fillings americans have in their teeth
the emphasis should be on the cost savings these bulbs afford, as i have seen an unbelievable decrease in my electric bill
but the bulbs themselves are not suited for every application
over the next few years, innovations will come to market that will astound us all, in terms of efficiency, practicality, and cost savings
Yea, right - there were cases when laptop batteries caught fire! So, stop using laptops!!
This is a classic ‘fear mongering’ technique we have seen again and again from ‘we-hate-Al-Gore’ crowd!
They have no solution to cut down the energy consumption. Instead, start quoting the bizzare incidents to prove their political talking points! Truly disgusting!
Anon, I’m sure if regular bulbs had mercury in them, and the CFL’s didn’t you people wouldn’t make an issue of it.
What is far more relevant is that these bulbs are manufactured in China.
So we are in essence supporting some of the dirtiest most polluting factories in the world.
But why to go for the environmentalist, to hell with the realities, as long as you can thump yourselves on the chest and claim you care! What a bunch of babbling idiots!
what about the fact that we've all been working under mercury-laden bulbs since the end of the second world war?
when does the "conserve" part of "conservative" begin to manifest itself in your words and your views, blamin?
this is common sense, bulb burns up less energy for the same light, bulb helps you save on your electric bill
if you are concerned about mercury, simply don't smash the bulbs on the floor, before you dispose of them
common sense, over hysteria regarding nothing
Anon,
Say what?
I guess I can understand you ignoring the point I made about China that’s what you people do best.
I’m not sure about the rest of your reference. As far as I know there’s been no uber secret light-bulb infestation that I’m unaware of – putz. Perhaps you’re talking some Upton Sinclair paranoia that I’m not privy to.
Conservative – as in conserve, I’m talking real conservatism – the fight against uncontrolled urban sprawl, where we get sick and damn tired of clear cutting for a new strip mall that has a “ultra-cut” shop along with a new Chinese buffet. As compared to the flat out BS you people feed us concerning global warming and other fictitious fantasies.
Back to the “bulbs”. I’m so glad you “swallow” the typical newspeak when it comes to this issue, all I can say is look to the realities, if your nads can stand it!
So American,
You're saying that the UK Environmental Board, who is the party that has brought this up, is part of the "hate AlGore crowd"? Why, those damned scare tactic using hate mongers!
blamin, fyi, ge washing machines are now made in china
hoover vacuum cleaners are now made in china
and, starting in 2009, all chrysler subcompacts will be imported from china
and i thought unfettered free trade was such a wondrous thing
i guess it's safe to say that, out of the proliferation of chinese imports, and the decimation of american industry by globalist neocon interests you've undoubtedly supported for years, in exchange for a light tax burden and a cheap barcalounger, you really had nothing of relevance to point out regarding compact fluorescent bulbs or their potential danger to the public either
blamin, seek help, risperdal is your friend
"So we are in essence supporting some of the dirtiest most polluting factories in the world."
Yes, your free market utopia. China is the face of the "minimal government regulation" that conservatives have been pushing
anon,
The government hasn't (yet) mandated that we buy washing machines (or vacuums, or subcompacts) that just so happen to be only made in China, your comparison is not relevant; it's also not surprising.
Realism,
Whose “free market utopia”? Do you actually think we would return to the standards as we lived under in the 1930’s? China isn’t the face of jackshit that “we’ve” been pushing.
Perhaps you should do your moniker justice and at least pretend to be “real”.
It's not the free market that is the problem, it's China's abuses that is. They need to be held accountable. We can use sanctions and such to encourage honesty and integrity in trade relations to help reduce or eliminate such negatives in China's products and business practices. As Blamin said, we're not forced to buy their crap.
