Teen gets 35 years for coach's murder
A 17-year-old who shot and killed a popular Waukesha boxing coach last year during a botched robbery at a Milwaukee gas station was sentenced this afternoon to 35 years in prison and 15 years of extended supervision.Antonio J. Jones was 16 at the time he pulled a gun and tried to rob Scott Huggins, 44, at a Citgo at 4302 W. Capitol Drive while he was fueling his SUV at 3 p.m. March 21. According to the criminal complaint, Huggins shouted a couple of profanities and appeared to try to grab the gun. Two shots were fired at Huggins who died later at Froedtert Hospital."I suspect that had you walked up to him that day and asked him for his friendship that he would have given it to you and that would have been immensely more valuable than any money taken from him," Circuit Court Judge Joseph Donald told Jones before handing down the sentence. "The impact of the life that was lost is devastating and destructive," he said. Huggins, 44, an electrician and grandfather, coached teens and young men at Medina's Boxing Gym on Waukesha's south side and served as a mentor to many, friends and family said during a victim impact statement. "You killed my best friend, a boxing coach who helped troubled youth," said Pat Hubertz, the victim's brother-in-law. Like many of the more than 15 who attended the sentencing, he wore a black "Medina's Boxing Gym" sweat shirt with white letter and Huggins' name on the back. Some cried quietly during the sentencing. Jones, whose wrists were shackled in chains, wept as he asked forgiveness from the Huggins family. "I hope and pray that they find it in their hearts to forgive me," he said. "I have to own up to my actions and consequences...I wished a million times I hadn't done that, but I can't change the past. I hope my family and the Huggins family can forgive my actions. I am truly sorry. "As he spoke, his great grandmother Deziree Wheeler, sobbed. She expressed sympathy for what had happened and asked the judge to "be merciful."According to his attorney Cynthia Wynn, Jones and two companions had been smoking marijuana all day when he got a gun and decided to try to rob someone. Reading from a presentence report, she said Jones suffers from fetal alcoholism syndrome, substance abuse problems and was found delinquent of second degree sexual assault when he was a minor.Jones agreed to plead guilty to first degree reckless homicide while armed after Huggins' wife told the judge she would rather have the certainty of a plea than have to endure a trial for the original charge of first degree intentional homicide.

And liberals like to claim smoking weed is fine...

Yeah, because nothing like this would ever happen to people who drink alcohol, right?
Because everyone knows how marijuana brings out the violent tendencies in people.
And we know that he was mentally disturbed BECAUSE he smoked marijuana, and it couldn't that he was mentally disturbed with or without smoking marijuana.
We all know that people who think that the easy availability of handguns in the inner city leads to violent crimes like this are morons - It's all about the "demon weed", hemp.
it would have been better if he had been drinking bud.
she said Jones suffers from fetal alcoholism syndrome,
You obviously know nothing about the effects of pot. It DOES NOT make one violent. As a matter of fact the most dangerous mental symptom is that it makes one to content.
This is another case where you find one vingnette and apply it to everything and everybody. Just look where this all started...with alcohol. How many stories can I find where alcohol was involved in violence or murder. Let me anwer that for you...At least one hundred to one. Enough to fill jails all over the country every night. ..Lets put it this way. Two people are arguing and fighting at a baseball game...are they drinking or smoking pot...anybody who has experience with both know the answer. This is right up their with your lamest Game.
well, i don't happen to believe "smoking weed is fine", it's simply not worth prosecuting, or interdiction efforts are a good use of taxpayer dollars, particularly when the government's in the drug business to begin with
and, to be honest, i'm not sure any marijuana use inspired or contributed to the commission of this crime, to begin with
that would be a weak excuse anyway
Nothing more needs to be said concerning this"real" shame........
Game, you okay? I'm worried about you...
"And liberals like to claim smoking weed is fine..."
who? which liberals? you are so adept at building straw men, game.
Tragic!
Here you have a person (child) who had the “whole deck” stacked against him from the get-go. He takes out one of the few that’s trying to make a difference.
Oh’ the house that liberals built! What a friggin shame!
We have talks about this at school often.
Weed leads to very bad decision making (so does alcohol, I agree)
However, the kids I teach don't think drinking is as awesome as weed, and I see the poor decision making and lack of any motivation as a result of weed.
This crime did not result from out of control violent behavior, they obviously were high and made a bad decision that they wanted to rob someone...that is where the weed came into play.
Just like it comes into play when a kid doesn't come to school 4 days in a week, or doesn't go to his job, or never gets a job. Alcohol becomes a big problem for a much lower percentage of people who do it.
I was just with a friend who smoked weed in college and was very animated in saying how glad he is that he stopped doing that and how slowly destructive it was.
Again, you see the liberals proponents of weed...so don't ask which liberals and who, it is all right here.
a lot of kids, especially in the inner city, don't respond to the usual references to jail, violence, and lack of productivity, because this is not unusual in their world
what does resonate to is point out the links to depression, bipolar disorder, and obsessive-compulsive disorder, and the meds needed to address those issues, whose manifestations they do see in their friends and families, and they do view with distaste and dread
point out someone they knew who committed suicide, and illustrate the depression that leads them to it
it really hits home, and not in a preachy way, that they can relate to
Good point
I like weed.
You might want to read up on fetal alcohol syndrome to further understand this.
"marshall art said...
'I like weed.'"
i am utterly unsurprised in regards to this revelation
wede maykes u smartt.
Marshall, I knew there was something different about you!
I much prefer it and my actions as compared to any other thing. Most especially alcohol. Alcohol ruined my life for some time.
ok first of all SERIOUSLY?
this has to be a joke..... HONESTLY? a person decides to rob someone because of a serious problem with their morals or the way they were raised I personally am a pot smoker (on an everyday basis) I volunteer and have almost 70 hours of voluntary community service this year... I choose to be a good person just as I choose to smoke weed, just like this person was obviously raised in a harsh environment and probably doesnt know much better. and for people who still believe weed is bad:
I suggest anyone to find for me a death as a direct result from marijuana
then go find deaths as a direct result from cigarettes.
tell me which number is worse
then go look up auto fatality rates and compare the numbers to places where marijuana is decriminalized...
caffine has also been proven to have more of an effect on your brain than marijuana also! open your eyes to the facts anyone feel free to fact check me please I encourage you to look into the history of marijuana.. its quite interesting
