seems like a thoughtful, intelligent woman.

I think that white people in this country can hardly understand life as a black or even brown person in this society. Even people that are good at putting themselves in someone else's shoes(usually the damned liberal). It's a whale of a lot better than it use to be.

I think there is a separate black and white culture. I think if they can do it within the laws of man both black and white cultures are a plus and not a minus to our nation as a whole.

I think this is what she probably meant when she said for the first time in her adult life she was really proud of her country.
The divide she had seen all her life had melted away. All were being allowed a fair shake.

Ron,

I think it's not too hard to understand other races. That they may indeed experience more shit due to their color is not in question, but it's not unique as regards human interaction. People are discriminated against for a variety of reasons. I've even seen a report of a study that indicates infants of attractive people are more well behaved than infants of less than attractive people. Fat people are often the subject of discriminatory comments or actions.

In many ways, blacks have segregated themselves. At first it was done for them by bigoted whites. Now, they insist on a separate culture. Why? Michelle Obama's comments in her thesis insist that there exists a bias impossible to overcome. It suggests she enters into a situation wary of bias and therefor expecting bias, which leads to an assumption of bias. In doing their part to overcome bias, blacks need to assume the opposite, that whites are not inherently "anti-black", until such behaviors manifest in their actions and words.

As a white guy (though I was born a poor black child), it is natural that when I hear, "I guy walks into a bar..." I think of a white guy. This is not bias. I don't seek out black people for friends. My friends all became friends through the same process and exposure to them on a routine basis was the most common factor. I simply am not exposed to many blacks on a regular basis. Those with whom I've worked over the years I've gotten along with famously. I don't care about color, I don't care about religion, I don't care about any of that stuff. I care about two things: character and smell. Be a nice guy and take a bath. (No one should have to smell ya comin'.)

The most humorous part of the article was the part where Michelle states that the libs on campus were the perps she had in mind.

it was a senior thesis. seems like she's probably had 15 to 20 years of life experience which might possibly influence her outlook today.

we could examine gwb's outlook on life before and after he got religion. quite a difference, i believe.

Marshall, I agree with most of what you say in your initial post. I am not opposed to a multi cultural country. I think it can be a big plus but when people separate themselves from the society as a whole it is damaging. Some in every culture do that. What concerns me about my understanding of the black culture in America is the black on black violence and "no snitch" rule which just breeds more violence and death. It appears to me they are harming themselves more than anyone they are fighting whitey or whatever and that ain't too smart!
