This is so sad.
Actually, the life lessons we teach our children in school is sad.
It's no longer the principles of hard work and dedication that are taught.
It's second, third, forth chances.
Bribes to do what you are supposed to do.
Special ed students who get to do whatever they want....and they know it.
We are teaching our kids that if they complain enough, if they band together and refuse to follow rules or work hard, educators will back down and give into them.
We are failing our kids, they are not getting prepared for the real world.

It's really sad. On the one hand, we are 'importing' so many Engineers and Doctors from countries like India, China. On the other hand, we are telling our kids to expect 'cash' for passing tests!!
What we truly need is strong culture of hardwork, dedication and parent involvement. Well...
"We are teaching our kids that if they complain enough, if they band together and refuse to follow rules or work hard, educators will back down and give into them.

Depends on who wins the culture war our country is in the midst of. If the liberals win, these kids will be superbly prepared.
Older generations used to tell their kids they wouldn't amount to anything. They were correct, and were doing their kids a service.
Now we shield children from life, and then wonder why they go on shooting sprees when they encounter frustration, disappointment, and failure. This should not be shocking -- every human for thousands of years has had to deal with these things.
Even the insane Bush hatred stems from the fact that Bush cannot walk on water and grant people every wish. People feel so entitled to things that they believe sinister forces (ruthless capitalists, greedy Jews, secret religious cliques, warmongering generals etc) MUST be tormenting us for their malevolent purposes.

This is 100000000% true...I have said that many times on my blog...we have to keep everyone's self esteem up...well guess what...sometimes when you f-up you should feel like crap...it makes a better, stronger person. Why do you think crazy ass protesters are always liberals...they can't deal properly with anger and frustration...
People feel so entitled to things that they believe sinister forces MUST be tormenting us for their malevolent purposes.
That is a BIG problem with our liberal, govt do everything for me, society. It was shown again tonight on the debates...Obama and Clinton had govt as the main solution to every problem...never hard work.
I got the same thing from the lamebate!
Platitudes on top of promises on top of fantasy.
Then I look at the alternative – McCain – and I weep! Not because he’s worse, but because he’s barely better!!!
none of you ever got paid for a's on your report card? (i didn't, but many have).
A-ninny-mouse
Who said anything about "A"'s?
What you have here is the rewarding of mediocrity. Damn, those progressives have vision!!!
Why are we turning this into progressive vs Conservative? Is it the only thing you are good at?
It goes back to the family and value system we have at home. I've lived in very 'liberal' (as per your definition, since they are not party loyalists) communities and the kids did a great job. Thy have some of the best public schools. When you have a stable marriage, hardworking parents and focus on education, kids automatically change their behavior. You can be a conservative and crappy dad with failed marriages and kids living with your ex...not paying any attention to education!! So...
You all are on crack. These are AP tests. Apparently you haven't been in AP classes. They are not rewarding kids for "mediocrity" They are rewarding them for EXCELLING.
As far as needing a "culture of hardwork [sic], dedication and parent involvement", well, that's exactly what Advanced Placement programs are all about. The news article you cited mentioned that the principal wants to double AP enrollment. I think that's a good idea.
If they want to reward students for excelling, that is called Operant Conditioning, and it doesn't hurt.
But, thank you for the delightful spectacle of watching you guys erecting those lovely "straw men" and tearing them down so forcefully.

And, of course, the most illogical, irrelevant, non-sequitor strawman award goes to Jason for this gem:
Even the insane Bush hatred stems from the fact that Bush cannot walk on water and grant people every wish.
ROFL!!! Yeah, Jason, THAT'S why people hate Bush, because he won't give us our magic ponies.
Let’s see if I got this right.
Create a dependant class culture, complete with boogey men to blame for all your ills, hammer home how it’s not your fault, actively promote proven destructive behavior, and do everything in your power to destroy the traditional family.
Then allow the state to take over the job of the family (reinforcement). Convince taxpayers they should support the solution to the created mess, and pat yourselves on the back for a job well done.
Then retire to the comfort of your self made la-la land, with a smug grin and a feeling of accomplishment.
Simply astounding!
And Blamin comes back for the win!!!
Straw Man Champion of teh WORLLLLLLDDDDD!!!!!!!!
You sure seem to know a lot about straw. I know that goats will swallow just about anything, but I thought weeds are the preferred fodder.
