Obama chooses sharp-edged Emanuel as staff chief, signaling switch in temperament as president

Barack Obama is signaling a shift in tactics and temperament as he moves from candidate to president-elect, picking sharp-elbowed Washington insiders for top posts.
His choice Thursday for White House chief of staff - Rahm Emanuel, a fiery partisan who doesn't mind breaking glass and hurting feelings - is a significant departure from the soft-spoken, low-key aides that "No-Drama Obama" surrounded himself with during his campaign. And transition chief John Podesta, like Emanuel, is a former top aide to Bill Clinton and a tough partisan infighter, though less bombastic than the new chief of staff.

Look, I am not going to be like all the liberals have been for 8 years with Bush...I WANT HIM to do a good job, I would LOVE to agree with him...I will look at his decisions on a case by case basis...which is the exact opposite of the disgusting way liberals treated W the last 8 years.

However, here we are, seeing that Obama is likely to be exactly what I said...he is a far left wing party hack who has never, ever, at any time shown he is a uniter, never shown he can reach across the partisan divide and bring people together.

I would love to be wrong, but even in my limited career following politics I can see this one coming a mile away. It's kind of sad you old fart Dems keep getting fooled time and time and time again...
I guess only time will tell...

It's a good thing you'd love to be wrong. You probably thought McCain would win, so you must be used to that. Sore loser.

Rahm is a long long long way from a liberal. I won't go into the whole story right now but he is known in liberal circles for stabbing liberals in the back. Most liberals aren't real happy with this appointment, including me.

We agree Rahms gotta go!

Of course I wouldn't expect you young wet behind the ears righties to know anything about liberal politics.

Is he more sharp-edged than say, Dick "Go F*ck Yourself" Cheney? Remember that whole compassionate conservative line we got fed in the summer of 2000? Then Dick's first visit to Senate chambers and he drops the F-bomb on a senator from the other party? C'mon Game, wait til the chickens hatch. You have no idea how Rahmbo will approach the job. It sure looks like you're going off what you hear from Sean "He sent a dead fish!" Hannity.

Yeah, Game, your instincts are FLAWLESS - Like when you said that it was going to be Romney and Clinton for the general, and Romney would win, or when you said that Clinton would clean Obama's clock.

Forgive me if I don't assign much weight to your predictions.

BTW, isn't it weird how you keep hearing that this is a center-right country after Obama's crushing victory while running on a progressive agenda?

I mean, not only did the Democrats pick the person that had the perception of being very liberal, BUT THE REPUBLICANS EVEN PICKED THEIR MOST LIBERAL CANDIDATE!!!

I mean, sure, people might describe themselves as "moderate" or "conservative" in a poll, but if you look at specific liberal policies like healthcare, taxation, minimum wage, global warming, trade, etc, Americans agree overwhelmingly with the liberal positions.

cult members don't get to be happy anymore, once they've signed their souls away to their leader

hang on one minute, game

mccain ran a terrible campaign that was only saved by palin, and so-called "real conservatives" did little to offer any real support

lest we throw stones, from within glass houses

So now we know the cause of your bitterness. Thanks for sharing.

Back on topic-
Game, you have to realize that if Obama had picked someone mild and conciliatory like himself, you would be criticizing him for choosing a Chief of Staff that would get rolled by the oh-so-powerful Congressional leadership (that somehow were unable to stand up to Bush on torture, FISA, Iraq, or the AG Scandal).

There's nothing that he can do right in your book. He is proposing a top tax rate that is over 10% lower than St Ronnie, and you call him a socialist.

He proposes refundable tax credits, and you call him a "redistributionist", meanwhile, McCain's refundable health insurance tax credit and increased child tax credit are accepted without a pause.

It is evident that Republicans have no real guiding principles. No matter what a Republican does, it is the right thing for the economy. When Bush turned Republican "conservatism" from limited government and fiscal responsibility to extreme government intrusion (Terri Schaivo, warrantless wiretapping, imprisoning Americans without charges) and exploding deficits (just like Reagan), you supported him without a peep.

A Democrat will always be an America-hating communist in your eyes, regardless of how he or she governs. Your blindness truly saddens me.

What an amazing period in American politics. I personally didn’t vote for Obama but am truly inspired by the positivity and global reaction resulting from his election, at least so far. His energy is addicting and his demeanor inspiring. I think Rahm Emanuel will do a phenomenal job as Obama’s chief of staffs. He’s hard nosed, stubborn, and won’t take “no” for an answer.

Obama’s story is truly American. I’d wish to dive into Obama’s mind and discover his motives and internal dialog. To go through a year of campaigning is very difficult, but to go through a year of campaigning and deliver a speech like he did that is truly inspirational. I’m excited about to see how he really attacks global warming and the energy crisis.

What’s also fascinating is looking at the dynamic of who voted, how they voted, and what drove them to vote. Obama’s campaign created a wave of energy that grew bigger and bigger as his campaign moved forward, engulfing (in a good way) each supporter and supercharging them. How did they do this? It all started with a vision. Obama’s vision, planted deep within his mind, began to take root almost 2 years ago today. The power of his vision can teach every American citizen about how to accomplish goals using the powers of visualization and intention.

I looked into this vision questing further and found that many super-successful people have been using vision boards to help focus their mind and accomplish their dreams. A vision board is a collage of images pasted on a board that represent your desired outcomes, your goals, and dreams. By studying your vision board, your brain gains clarity on what is important to your success, the things you MUST accomplish. I found a site www.TheVisionBoardKit.com that allows you to download a free 8-step power plan to creating vision boards. I’d highlight recommend downloading it.

Wait a minute...I am taking the opinion of AP on this guy...I'll admit I don't know anything about him...
You guys are so wound up and insulting...
I am really trying to be as fair as I can, really...
Liberals, you can turn down the hate speech and insults that was your way of life for 8 years no matter what happened...

No, that is not true...I am believing the AP story...Obama is supposed to work with both parties yet he is showing he is far, far, far left...and you are wrong, if he picked a moderate or conservative I would not complain...

He proposes refundable tax credits, and you call him a "redistributionist", meanwhile, McCain's refundable health insurance tax credit and increased child tax credit are accepted without a pause.

I never said anything good about McCain's health plan...they both suck...

Another hash non sequitur(patent pending)

-Liberals, you can turn down the hate speech and insults that was your way of life for 8 years no matter what happened...-

Game, first I agreed with you. Im not happy with this guy. Second if you think this guy is a liberal you better do some reading. I guarantee you he was not. One example, he was instrumental in getting NAFTA passed. Not a good thing in my book. Second, he has spent money to defeat liberals so he could run one of his DLCers. Seriously Game, the sharp elbows part is because of the tactics not the philosophy.

Next, I did not hate Bush until he earned it. 75% of the country agrees so it's not out of your vaulted 'mainstream'. If you want to see hate speech look at almost every post on this blog since you started. Check your adjectives for example. If you can turn down the rhetoric and examine things without the inflamatory rhetoric I can too. If you decide you want to punch someone in the face don't think they are going to stand there and take it without punching back. That's the way it works in the real world my friend.

"Barack Obama is signaling a shift in tactics and temperament"

This is simply not the case. Barack Obama has always been a Chicago-style politician. Conservatives from Hannity to the average blogger have been saying "Barack is a nice guy, but we really don't know what he stands for." As a current resident of Chicago, such statements simply make me cringe. Obama has a record both in Springfield and in Washington. I do very much admire both the ruthlessness and the creativity of the current crop of Democrats; all Republicans can do today is keep humping Reagan's dead corpse.

The Republicans at the national level-- both the hayseeds and the fuddy duddy elites on the East Coast -- clearly have no idea what they're up against. This kind of corruption isn't even like New Jersey corruption, which is a messy, stinky disease without a cure. Fighting Chicago Dems, i.e. Daley, Blagojevich, both Jesse Jacksons, Farrakhan, Rahmbo, Rush, Davis -- is more like fighting Skynet-- they keep coming after you, and then after you, and then after you, and they do it with mechanical competence and clean efficiency.

For example...? Or would it be too much effort to back up your character assassination with facts or examples?
