Funny Business in Minnesota

Strange things keep happening in Minnesota, where the disputed recount in the Senate race between Norm Coleman and Al Franken may be nearing a dubious outcome. Thanks to the machinations of Democratic Secretary of State Mark Ritchie and a meek state Canvassing Board, Mr. Franken may emerge as an illegitimate victor.

Mr. Franken started the recount 215 votes behind Senator Coleman, but he now claims a 225-vote lead and suddenly the man who was insisting on "counting every vote" wants to shut the process down. He's getting help from Mr. Ritchie and his four fellow Canvassing Board members, who have delivered inconsistent rulings and are ignoring glaring problems with the tallies.
Under Minnesota law, election officials are required to make a duplicate ballot if the original is damaged during Election Night counting. Officials are supposed to mark these as "duplicate" and segregate the original ballots. But it appears some officials may have failed to mark ballots as duplicates, which are now being counted in addition to the originals. This helps explain why more than 25 precincts now have more ballots than voters who signed in to vote. By some estimates this double counting has yielded Mr. Franken an additional 80 to 100 votes.

This is shameful and wrong. But, here are Democrats not really caring about the integrity of elections, just winning. Now, liberals can come here and talk about another case, but we are talking about this one. Frankin and other liberals are flat out stealing this election. There is no other way to put it. I would love for a liberal to come on here and speak intelligently about why this is not disenfranchising voters.

there are no machinations by the secretary of state. and the canvassing board is equal parts republican and democrat, yet nearly all their decisions have been unanimous.

"double counting has yielded Mr. Franken an additional 80 to 100 votes"

take them away and al STILL wins by 125.

but we get it. you want to try to delegitimize any election you can't win.

No so much "funny business" as it is a WSJ editorial full of demonstrable lies.

things need to be fair anon, this is flat out cheating and stealing, but of course you don't care because it has been proven time and time again that the left only cares about winning...documented over and over as opposed to the fairytale stories you guys make up to try and make it look equal...

We all learned from Florida in 2000 that we need to just move on for the good of the country. Now we learn that those who gave us that good advice 8 yrs ago are...what? Flip flopping?

There's a difference between moving on because the results are accurate, like in 2000, and moving on when they're not, like it seems to be in Minnesota, whose Vikings found defeat at the hands of those wonderful Eagles of Philly. As a Bear fan, that's sweet!

Marshall, what's not accurate? The recount was open and nd transparent

Campaigns had the ability to contest every vote, and Coleman contested thousands.

Every contested vote was examined in a public meeting, broadcast live on the internet, and archived for all to see.

The challenges were counted by 2 Republicans, 1 Democrat, and 2 independent/ non-partisan members of the canvassing board.

Coleman's attorneys were there every step of the way, and the best argument they had (rejected unanimously by the majority-Republican state SC) was that if they could count a bunch of other ballots from Republican counties they could win! Even though they gave no reasons why those ballots should be counted other than the likelihood they were Coleman votes.

So what's not accurate?

no it hasn't. it hasn't at all, ever. EVER.

Jay, how about the fact that we have all these ballot boxes just poping up for Frankin with mostly Frankin votes?
How about the fact all those districts have more votes than voters...I know you didn't care when that happened in Milwaukee, so I guess its fine now.
If it is fair, there are not double counted votes, not mysterious ballots found that all go to one guy, then thats fine...
The fact that some dead heads bring up 2000 as a comparison show a lack of understanding when it comes to facts.

"...no it hasn't. it hasn't at all, ever. EVER..."

no, it really hasn't

what's become lost in the minnesota debacle is that BOTH candidates were absolutely God-awful

and, i think a lot of liberals and other left-of-centers will be quite disappointed, because franken is far from truly representing their views and interests....in the oddest way, they're boxed even further into a corner

What boxes are you talking about? Did you even read the link I posted--there are NO precincts with more votes than voters. Coleman's people are not making that claim, and they have seen every ballot, every number. Where are you getting this stuff?

coleman claims there are more votes than votes counted on election night.

duh! that's because they are counting votes that were NOT COUNTED election night because they were challenged at the time or are absentee ballots.
