Wisconsin State Fair Day IX: Friday August 12th

There were 7500 people who "dared to move" (-Switchfoot) their butts to the Wisconsin State Fair Grandstand Friday night, despite the threat of rain. The lead singer looks like a Kurt Cobain who ate a whole lot of pixie sticks and Mountain Dew before the show. He ran around the stage, climbed the side of the stage about 20 feet up, and jumped off the stage 10 feet into the crowd even though their music isn't quite hard enough to warrant such a hard rocker mentality. Of course, when he jumped off the stage it was my job to protect him...it really helped me when he then sprinted to the track wall and jumped up on it so he could see the people in the grandstand. I don't think I ever got closer that 4 feet to him. He was surrounded by 16 year old girls screaming that he touched them.

I was worried that the show would be like Jam for Peace, with people rushing the stage and not really caring about the rules of order and common sense. The crowds were equal in size on the track and the age level was similar. However, there was a difference. People at this concert listened to the security, had a good time, but didn't rush the stage, didn't try and dance in the isle and didn't try and stand on their seats. I am not sure what the difference was in the crowd, but if I figure it out I will let you know.

I felt old when a slow song started and everyone took out their cell phones for light instead of the traditional cigarette lighter. The lead singer even made a comment: "Take out your cell phones, anything that lights up, and lighters for you nicotine addicts out there" How times have changed...I am sure that there will be many more lighters tonight for the 80's rock show.

Two more good lines...."Lets remember tonight, a night we played a rock show where they usually race NASCAR" and "at a state fair where the world's finest cheeses are on display.

Cream puff count...5
