Comparing 9-11 to Katrina

Lets compare the leadership

9-11:  Rudolph Giuliani and George Pataki come out right away and took charge.  They were right in the thick of things; they were role models to look up to.  No one heard them whining and complaining about anything.  They had a job to do, and they did it.  Maybe it is just a coincidence that they are Republicans.

Hurricane Katrina:  Gov. Blanco and Mayor Nagin did not follow their evacuation plans, were not heard from for days, and when they were heard from they were whining and crying like losers that that George Bush was not helping them fast enough.  Maybe it is just a coincidence that they are both Democrats.

Hear is why the local government failed:
The primary responsibility for dealing with emergencies does not belong to the federal government. It belongs to local and state officials who are charged by law with the management of the crucial first response to disasters. First response should be carried out by local and state emergency personnel under the supervision of the state governor and his emergency operations center.
The actions and inactions of Gov. Blanco and Mayor Nagin are a national disgrace due to their failure to implement the previously established evacuation plans of the state and city. Gov. Blanco and Mayor Nagin cannot claim that they were surprised by the extent of the damage and the need to evacuate so many people. Detailed written plans were already in place to evacuate more than a million people. The plans projected that 300,000 people would need transportation in the event of a hurricane like Katrina. If the plans had been implemented, thousands of lives would likely have been saved.
In addition to the plans, local, state and federal officials held a simulated hurricane drill 13 months ago, in which widespread flooding supposedly trapped 300,000 people inside New Orleans. The exercise simulated the evacuation of more than a million residents. The problems identified in the simulation apparently were not solved.
It must be noted that:
The difference between 9-11 and Katrina is that even with the terror attacks, most of the city was able to function…after Katrina the whole city was under water.  All the supplies and rescue equipment was unable to be used.
Lets not forget another reason for a slow rescue effort:
9-11:  Everyone was helping each other
Katrina:  people were looting and shooting at rescue workers.

So, who is to blame?
My opinion:
Local officials:  They showed no leadership, no strength, they whined and complained….they didn’t even follow their own evacuation plans, so many, many more people died than needed to.
FEMA:  I don’t know how fast they are supposed to respond, but local groups are suppose to respond first.
Federal government:  Not great, probably could have been there a day earlier.  Now they have taken over the lack of leadership and are doing a great job.

To compare 9/11 and hurricane Katrina is like comparing apples and a pair of argyle sox. There is no comparison, as you go on to admit later in your post.

The mayor and governor were in over their heads, incompetent perhaps. To suggest that it's because they aren't Repulicans is beyond rediculous.

The head of FEMA was not in over his head. He was just plain incompetent. Not qualified for the position.

All the arguing about jurisdiction and permission from whoever is bull crap, and it only demonstrates a lack of leadership by the people who had the power to do something after the fact. As much as the mayor and governor may be at fault, and certainly they are, there is at least an equal share of blame on federal officials and leaders for freezing and not blowing past any bureaucratic obstacles as soon as they arose.

One last thing. There was looting, and some of it was immoral and criminal. But it is NOT the story of New Orleans. It is a sidebar. The city is not a lawless battle zone. If it were, how come Shepard, Geraldo, and Anderson were able to be there and help out without having the asses shot off?

Scorpion says--
Imagine that! Some hoodlum who grabbed guns and rifles instead of food and water doesn't want to be on camera or video tape shooting at Geraldo, or any other network celebrity. Imagine that! The fact is, these criminals will shoot at telephone workers because the cameras are not running. The governor and the mayor are at fault that is not "rediculous"! Ridiculous is thinking the Federal agencies didn't respond when they realized the magnitude of the devastation. That is their mistake.

I don't have a great knowledge about FEMA or what they are expected to do...so I can't give much response there...

I didn't say they were incompetent because they were democrats, it must just be a coincidence...

Once anyone simply blames bush and says he hates blacks...they show how stupid they are and how desperate they have become in trying to gain back power...

The looters caused 1500 rescue workers to stop doing their job to go after looters...

I did wonder how reporters were able to get in there yet relief could not...and I always wonder how reporters don't get shot in high risk situations...

And based on your logic...Iraq must not be lawless.

Let's see Geraldo, Shepard, and Anderson go outside the Green Zone. :-)

Jim, you are obviously out of touch with reality. As I explained in the previous posting "since 1994", New Orleans has been extremely HIGH CRIME for years. If you don't believe my personal accounts of this, just go check out the violent crime stats for US cities. Murder capital of the US anyone? Also, the reporters you mentioned all admitted that they were HEAVILY GUARDED, while they were reporting, and they also admitted that most average citizens, obviously did not have the luxury of having 15 PERSONAL ARMED GUARDS protecting them....gee Jim how many guards per each New Orleans evacuee would that have taken???????? LOL, you're too funny.
