Silence of the Left? NBC Casts Afghani Conversion Case as Conservative Issue

I"m confused as well. Based on what I hear in the MSM, it is the Left that is the champion for tolerance, free speech, religious freedom and human rights.

Why is it the Right that is protesting the possible death of an Afgan man who converted to Christianity?
Why was it the Right that stopped women from being bared from schools and jobs in Iraq and Afghanistan?
What does the Left actually DO?

So this Mark Finklestein is some kind of news analyst with expertise on the subject? By what measure? He has mis-characterized the meaning and intent of the Mitchell article.

If Andrea Mitchell is doing a story about the relationship between Bush and his Christian Conservative base and the rebellion of that base, liberals and liberal "outrage" have nothing whatsoever to do with the subject.

So once again you have manufactured a non-existant story as a vehicle to bash liberals.

The left has been speaking up every bit as much as the right on this subject. Finklestein's (and your) assertion that the left is silent on this matter is simply false.

So don't focus on the article and focus on the issue....I really didn't focus on the article in my comments...

Why does the Left protest an illegal immigration bill and protest a war...but there are never any protests against any dictator who oppresses women or religious groups?

That is my question...

Answer: They really only protest when they think it will benefit them politically. Maybe in the 60's that was not true, but it sure is today. Otherwise, they would have been protesting Sadam and anyone else who kept women as a sub-human class...

That's the point.

You and Finklestein are using this article to raise a false issue.

The "left" has been protesting dictators who oppress women and religion for years, and they still are. The left protested the Shah of Iran who was a brutal, brutal dictator.

The "left" protested against Saddam and US involvement with him back in the 80s.

The "left" protested against the brutal, brutal Chilean dictatorship that overthrew the democratically elected government with the help and support of the US government.

The "left" protested against the brutal regimes in Central America that were illegally supported by the Reagan-Bush administration.

Where was the outrage by the "right" in all these cases? There was none. Why? Because our government SUPPORTED these brutal, oppressive dictators and regimes.

So as much as you decry the supposed "selective" outrage of the "left", the "right" is every bit as selective in its outrage.

So give up this utterly false issue. It smells of desperation.

where are all these protests?
I see protests no all the issues I talked about, don't remember anyone protesting anything you are talking about

Then you are being selective. The protests occurred. Maybe you were too young to be aware or care. Or you only notice protests when they are against something you favor.

The left likes to protest evil, as long as it does not entail any meaningful action within, to be precise, the physical universe.

If the left was consistent, they'd support what we've done in Iraq -- overthrowing a regime and putting a democracy in place. It is sharp contrast to the Cold War "realism" where we supported dictators and assassinated people to ensure the reds lost.

But no, it is obvious it is the feeling of moral virtue the left is after, and not moral virtue itself. All you need is love, right?

Sorry, Jason, but I have to say that's hogwash. Another gratuitous smear against the left.

Jim is correct, game. The left always opposed oppressive dictators while the right only wanted to target oppressive communist dictators...except for Nixon. I dont remember much about Pinochet(a little, though), but all the rest were big fights. Its why Reagan concocted the arms for oil fiasco.

The Game said...

yes, I am young, so I am dealing mostly with what has happend since the end of Reagan and beyond...where the Left simply talks and protest, while the Right DOES things...and yes, they do not always work, but they work better than bitching

The right does things like what?

Pass a medicare bill that will bankrupt the country?

Pass tax cuts for the wealthy which will bankrupt the country?

Attack sovereign nations and occupy them with incompetent administrators at a cost of billions of dollars a month that will bankrupt the country?

Spend billions of dollars on a missile defense system which will never stop a suitcase bomb and bankrupt the country?

Yes, the Republics do things... like the above. They are in power.

When the Democrats attempt to do things such as raise the amount of money spent on port security, the Republics vote them down.

Democrats can't do things if they are in the minority. When they DO become the majority, how could they POSSIBLY do worse?

I understand your need to aviod the issue once again...I don't remember anyone talking about spending habits here..and this goes beyond politicans...it is the Left that runs around and protests, but does nothing..

ANOTHER EXAMPLE:
A boy was beat to death in the inner c ity this weekend in Milwaukee...people will have vigils, conferences and marches to "stop the violence"...and that will solve NOTHING...

The Left has done NOTHING for minorities and poor. If they have done anything that has helped tell me...they get all the black vote, yet blacks are worse off year after year, why is that? because they listen to the message of the Left....if they listened to the Right, they might get out of their hell in 15 or 20 years

Jim said...

I'm not avoiding any issue. I'm following the thread. Are you?

The Game said...

you really must have nothing here on this issue...

I am talking about the Left giving lip service and you go into Republican spending habits...

This issue seems to be dead...

How could they do worse...

Hey Jim ever hear of someone called LBJ and a place called Vietnam or a man named carter and a place called Teheran...
