Congress Nears Deal on Illegal Immigrants

Senate Republicans and Democrats closed in on a last-minute compromise Thursday on legislation opening the way to legal status and eventual citizenship for many of the 11 million immigrants living in the United States illegally.

The Republicans have blown it. What in this bill will stop illegal immigration...it didn't work in 1986 and it will not work now

12 million new people not getting the consequences of breaking the rules....that is the mindset in this country now.

The Left atleast has a plan here, they want 12 million new votes.
What is the Right doing? What are they getting...people looking for handouts are not EVER going to vote Republican.

We need the wall, and the best comprimise would be a worker card for people that have worked here for 5 years...no citizenship unless you do it right.

Do you want to deport 12,000,000 souls? I'm probably closer to Bush on this than populists like Dobbs and Buchanan.

well, think about it... even in practical terms, what's an amnesty program going to do? I'm sure illegals are going to flock to their nearest INS office and apply for a temporary work permit they may or may not get that enables them to do....what they're already doing. And the penalty for not doing so is? Nothing. Seriously, what's the point? Where's the incentive?

I'm with Neal on this: no services for illegals (life-saving emergency medical care excepted), and stiff fines for people who hire illegals. There you go... two steps, problem solved, they'll go home on their own, no deportation necessary.

I'm not so sure they would all go home...

but yes...NO NO NO services for people who have not followed the law in terms of immigration...the problem is...how many kids are there who ARE legal with illegal parents...the anchor babies...

that is a problem...

I know the wall looks like a bad symbol, but I think it is necessary...

will we be able to deport 12m...no

BUT, we can make a damned good dent in them IF we put forth the effort, and it's high time we did.
