Glenn Beck had an interesting segment on tonight, on Headline News.
Beck had the author of "Generation Me" on his program (Google it yourself if you're interested, it was hyperlinking this article that screwed me over).
He wondered if Hilary Clinton shouldn't have reneged on her statement of young adults. She said they were slackers.
Are they?
They're more ambitious than ever - 75% of college students say they're going to grad school. The percentage that actually goes, however, is a different story.
Do kids nowadays set unrealistic goals?
65% of kids are moving back in with their parents. Now, this isn't a story of "I'm saving money to move out." These kids were moved out, and couldn't afford it. Thus, they moved back in and many don't have jobs.
What does this say about our culture?
Do we baby kids too much too late in life?
Why do we give out 9th place trophies and "thanks for participating" certificates?
I like how Beck put it: "When my kid turns 18, I'm going out to the driveway, starting his car (that he bought himself) and waving goodbye, telling him to visit when he can."
In the real world, when you interview for a job and don't get it "...because you're a moron, then you don't get paid," Beck explains.
I could have hugged him for that.
The question was: Are we self-hating narcissists?
Why is high self-esteem and high depression both rampant today? Aren't they contradictory?
Or, are we placing such a high amount of importance on material goods that when our unrealistic goals fail, we have nothing to fall back on?
Some good points to ponder... and it scares me that the generation right after me is so full of babies.
