AP: Millions of Visa Overstays Overlooked

MEXICO CITY (AP) -- Millions of illegal immigrants in the United States never jumped the U.S.-Mexico border where Congress wants to erect impenetrable walls and President Bush is sending National Guard troops to patrol. They never sneaked in at all.

The little-acknowledged reality is that nearly half the estimated 12 million undocumented foreigners in the United States entered on bona fide U.S. visas - and simply never left. Authorities call them "overstays" who have been largely overlooked in the vitriolic debate on immigration.

Few thoughts on this story:
1. This is the liberal media's way of saying, "protecting the border is stupid"
2. Why does our govt not enforce its laws. I know it would be tough, but every single one of these people must be found and sent home.
3. If we have this "guest worker program," what is going to stop all these new people from overstaying their welcome.
4. This shows that the system is broken and it doesn't look like we are capable or willing to fix it.

1. Why is everything reported in the media that you disagree with somehow indicative of "liberal bias". I guess if it's printed or uttered (except on Fox or the Washington Times) it's "liberal" and therefore a lie. Is that it?

2. Maybe if the government wasn't spending billions each week in Iraq, maybe if the government wasn't giving BILLIONS of dollars to people who already HAVE billions, maybe if our deficits weren't skyrocketing, maybe if our national debt hadn't gone from $5 trillion to over $8 trillion in the last 5 and a half years, then maybe there would be enough money to hire INS agents and staff to keep track of these people and enforce the regulations.

But conservatives want smaller government. This is what you get with smaller government: no enforcement of immigration laws, no enforcement of environmental laws, no enforcement of SEC laws.

But man, we got pictures of Saddam with a beard!

3. The point of the guest worker program is to encourage them to GO back home without fear of having to sneak BACK across the boarder every time they do go home. They stay because swimming across the Rio Grande once is enough.

4. We are capable of fixing the system. The problem is many people, like Sensenbrenner say "It's my way or the highway." Nothing will get fixed that way.

How about a novel idea:

The U.S. Border Patrol gets up off their asses, they do their jobs, and not let them in to begin with?

This is what we pay them for!

I suppose liberals one day will learn how to pronounce "faux" or perhaps they think we dumb conservatives don't?
