I would just like someone to explain how giving minority-only scholarships is just fine, but a big time controversy if someone wants to give a white scholarship...
I think either they are all okay, or none of them are okay.

It's being controversialized game because it's not meant to do the same as what race-based scholarships do, which is give out a scholarship (or scholarships) to a certain racial group.
The controversy is in this part: Award meant to protest race-based scholarships
i.e., it's not meant to do something good for someone who's white. It's just meant to protest other scholarships.
Now, if they had offered it to actually do some good for someone who is white (and white as snow, not just 25% caucasian), in other words a regular race-based scholarship for the white race, then that would be a good thing in most people's eyes. But to do it just to take a stab at someone else, and for no other real reason, is making it look not so great.
Did we do this to give a scholarship to white kids? Of course not
Well, if they had, they'd get plenty kudos from me. Doing that would spark the competition and bring the attention that they want in and of itself. There would be no need to do it as a protest. It would stand on its own merits.

You’ve missed the whole point, which is, had this really been just about giving a scholarship to a Caucasian, the cacophony would be deafening! They felt they had to do it this way just to start a legitimate, and most importantly, out-in-the-open debate.
I’ve got to had it to those guys, they’ve got ‘nads!
I wonder if the recent Richards outburst will influence this debate? It shouldn’t, but since when did logic have anything to do with a debate involving PC?

You don't understand. It is all about having a good intent. And by definition, liberals like Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton have good intents, while conservatives like Thomas Sowell and Walter Williams have cold hearts.
That's about as thoughtful and enlightened these people get.
That was my point, was the intent of this.
The intent should have been focused on the people the scholarships were given out to; if it had been, then they would have made their point by that alone.

Right on game. Better yet, make all scholarships based on need and merit, only, with no account towards color or sport.
