NYC Health Board Votes to Ban Trans Fats

This seems wrong to me on so many levels...
Are trans fats illegal?
We ban trans fats but not cigarettes?
What a joke.
Where will we draw the line. You want to talk about the government butting into our lives....
Lets see as much outrage over this as the government listening to terrorist on the phone.

They are morons following a fad. They think that if they ban trans fats, it means something. Of course it doesn't, and in ten years no one will even think about trans fats anymore. But it is a way to get themselves exposure and make it seem as if they are doing something to help people, while really they are just causing more problems in people's lives.

I have mixed feelings. On the one hand, I can see the rationale behind this--they are trying to help people's health. On the other hand, I certainly do not think the government (at any level) should be tell us what we can/can't cook with and eat. There is enough news science to support their hatred of trans-fat (it is most certainly disgusting, vile stuff that should be avoided if possible), but with that said there is also enough information available that we should all be educated enough about the potentially harmful impact of trans-fat to stay away from it without government prompting. So there's my two cents on the whole debate...

Well frankly game there is no way I can compare this as being as onerous as phone tapping but I am very opposed. I would be fine if they want to spend money to do studies and report science to us so we are informed. Let people come to their conclusions on there own and not buy force. Cigarette smoking(sadly guilty) is way down and I think it has nothing to do with banning smoking in some building. A government giving citizens good input to make decisions is a good thing in my book. A government making a law against everything they don't like walks us toward opression.

I don't know. I think we should think about the children who will be inheriting this earth, and what we're feeding them, and also about all the parents out there who don't know jack shit about what to feed them.

Sadly, these poisoned apples have ruined it for the good apples.

I have to be torn in a way...
I am a health teacher and if I was simply concerned at reaching my goal...alcohol, tobacco, fast food, ect... would all be illegal.
However, Ron is probably right...we have to give information to the public and have them make the right dicision...
There is a line to cross regarding what the government should make illegal because it is deemed unreasonably harmful...such as heroin.
I don't even mind bad food costing more than good food, but a total ban on something that is legal seems too far.

Just another nail in the coffin. One of these days the citizens of this country are going to wake up (I hope) from their stupor and wonder what the hell happened to “The Land of the Free”.

Really. I agree with Ron here and I think it should be marked on everyone's calender and greeting cards sent every year. The best the gov should do in these situations is present evidence to support their position on the harmful effects of this or any other substance. As one who spent a year as a vegan, I've come to believe there are tons more foods that are taken for granted, but cause damn near every health issue that people routinely face. Yet, I wouldn't ever suggest or endorse banning them. What people take the time to study will convince them sufficiently to make the necessary lifestyle changes. At least I hope it would.
