Brits in record numbers go abroad for health care

More than 70,000 Britons will have treatment abroad this year, the London Sunday Telegraph reported, a number that is forecast to rise to 200,000 by 2010.

In the first survey of its kind in the UK, Britons said long waits for treatment by the NHS and fears of the growing hospital-infection crisis were the primary reasons they chose to seek medical care elsewhere.

It's a no-brainer...government run health care does not work ANYWHERE. Also, the bigger the program, the worse it is. DO NOT LET DEMOCRATS RUIN YOUR HEALTH CARE.

Of course, the world nut daily fails to mention that the website they site also has an article detailing how Americans are also traveling abroad in record numbers for health care due to the fact that "By travelling abroad for complex medical procedures, Americans can save between five and 20 times the cost of having their operations on home soil."

More fair and balanced reporting, I guess.

Sorry, that should be "the website they CITE"

Exactly, Real! Americans are going to Thailand and India in droves for these procedures.

As usual, Game presents only one side of the story. He nicely hides other facts. The fact that Americans are also traveling abroad to get the procedures is conveniently ignored. He also doesn’t mention anything about the cost. In countries like India and Thailand, you can get the same quality procedures for a fraction of what it costs over here or Europe.

This is only going to continue. This is the next logical extension of ‘outsourcing’ trend that we have been witnessing over the past few decades. First it was manufacturing, then the service sector, now the health care. The outsourcing of medical transcribing is already going on.

Here is the hint: It's called 'Heath Tourism' these days!

So, I suggest you do some research before publishing smear posts.

True enough. My son had a cat-scan recently and they sent the data to Australia to be diagnosed.

This is the tragedy of national health care. The rich can always fly to India to get the hip replacement done cheaply. Working class neanderthals like myself either have to wait in the queue, or put up with the wild price distortions socialism creates in the market.

Again-- the best of intentions, but the worst of results.

I see this changing slowly...maybe too little, too late...
Some places actually advertise their prices...I see this as a good thing. If we had more competition, that MIGHT lower health care costs...
I didn't say it WILL...
On this issue I'm not sure what the magic pill is, but I KNOW it is not socialized medicine.

What sense does that make?

About as much as believing that reducing taxes increases revenue or that a free market for goods and services will exist absent government oversight.

Jim--

Government underwrites almost 50% of the healthcare bills in the United States. When the government pays the bills for things, price rises. We see this in the Pentagon, in college tuition, with the Bush prescription drug plan, etc.

I've explained why this happens here ad nauseum. If there was a universal automobile plan that gave Americans free cars, what would happen? Taxpayers would order the best cars (plural) since the government is picking up the tab. Automakers would make record profits, expand production, and raise prices -- the gov't is footing the bill. And then socialist politicians would demonize the corporations for the situation the socialists created, demanding price controls and/or rationing to stop corporate greed.

This has happened in almost every democracy-- it would be a great tragedy if it happened here. Some other country like India would have to carry the torch of freedom and progress.

In a market situation, individuals compete for market share by increasing quality and/or quantity, and reducing cost. That's why LASIK surgery and cosmetic surgery have drastically fallen in price -- private financing, and no government intervention.

Makes total sense to me...so I guess the liberals won't get it...they will not be able to understand how the govt getting involved is anything BUT good.

Down with government! Who needs it?

government's job is to protect us (military) and do things we can not do as individuals (things like roads and bridges)...that is it, and that is all it ever was until the creation of the modern day liberal...

I like your definition protection = military! A typical of you!

What about protecting your jobs? What about protecting the interestes of our farmers or industry?

Seriously - Do you know how big is outsourcing now? I don't know where you work. I suggest you take a walk into the corporate houses in Milwaukee downtown to get a tsate of outsourcing!! Do you know how Dollar is weakening and foreign companies are betting on euros these? Do you know how much we are borrowing everyday to keep our economy going? Do you understand the ramifications of 'shifted loyalty' from Dollars to euros in the future?

Hope you take up these issues with your conservative friends instead of wasting your time on bashing librals!

American...important issues all...
I am not going to pretend I know the answers to those questions...but I am going to guess more govt is not the answer...
