Obama and the Hip-Hop Problem

Young black activists roared their approval when Barack Obama recently greeted criticism on the trail by dusting off his shoulders, a reference to a rap song by Jay-Z called "Dirt Off Your Shoulder." The media covering the moment went crazy, too. Washington Post reporter Teresa Wiltz hailed Obama’s moves and called it a "seminal moment in the campaign, the merging of politics and pop culture," and noted the lyrics suggest "If you feelin’ like a pimp...go and brush your shoulders off."
So Barack Obama is feeling like a pimp?

I would prefer if my President didn't feel like a pimp...especially since the last Democrat President was a pimp....or a ho...not sure which one...

YET.."OH NO" Obama goes on...and on..imagine that...

I think that part of what people like about Obama is that he seems to be more authentic. Most candidates for national office are thoroughly sterilized and inoffenseively bland, like fast food.

If you really think that the word pimp only has one meaning, then you probably should refrain from opining on popular culture.

Yes,game I left some snarky comments that you likely will not post. I don't really care if you do. I have no idea how to take you guys seriously anymore. Please leave the shallow end .

'Dusting off shoulders' - is something we all knew much before Jay-Z! Sounds like it's conservatives going crazy over this!

shallow is the perfect description
for "Oh no" Obama...put rear in front of end...that would work too..maybe a job in basketball as a
decent skill level there certainly
is obvious compared to no apparent skills politically..

Come on Realism, surely you’re not serious.

Of all the candidates originally in the race – not just the three in the running – Obama seems to be the least “real”. Oh he can give a speech that will have high school girls “a-quaking-at-the-knees” that’s for damn sure, but he has to be the most shallow, transparent candidate I’ve ever had the opportunity to consider. One has to wonder, if this man were white, would he have ever made it this far?

Seriously, Realism, what makes this man “more authentic”? I’m begging you to enlighten me!

Perhaps it’s the people he’s energized – that’s a good thing, I don’t know, I’m curious.

Blamin,

Ferraro wondered the same thing. Of course we know he'd still be an unknown Illinois state senator if he was white. (In fact, I've never got the "handsome" label applied to him. Whiten his pigment and call him Harold Beekman, and no chick would give him the time of day. Just personal opinion on the most superficial aspect of this buffoon's alure.)

As to the "dusting of shoulders" angle, I really don't care. If latching on to some gesture from popular culture is "seminal moment", then his followers are as vacuous and empty as Barry's rhetoric. Consider all that they ignore or forgive from their messiah, and the "boost" that this gives him with the shallow supporters is not surprising at all.
