Don't worry, all we need is:
more money
more meetings
bash teachers for not working hard enough
DO NOT:
blame the kids
blame the parents
blame the community
So in the liberal world of education you DO the things that do NOTHING to help, and DO NOT do what would actually help. Shame is not a bad thing.
I can go into class this morning and tell the kids about this story and they wouldn't miss a beat.
Here is a simple but correct comment: You can't teach kids who don't go to school...

GAME...Exactly "RIGHT"...Maybe instead of grants to stop truancy..
the money can be just handed over to parents who get their kids to school every day..a deal is set up..to do what my parents did on a daily basis because a part of parenting is making sure your kids go to school every day..Imagine That..a return to real parenting...
Do they not have truant officers anymore?
So if MPS now spends $10K per student per year and half of them are not there on any given school day, doesn't this mean MPS is really spending $20K per student per year?
And ya'll know what they'll be asking for to "solve" this problem.
Maybe, just maybe half the kids skip is because they're afraid of being stabbed.

Hamilton High on lockdown after stabbing.
wow....was not aware
game, it's not a "left vs right" issue
truth is, they cast about for a convenient scapegoat to fix the blame to
ultimately, it is the parents/guardians who are responsible
and black neighborhoods have a vastly higher proportion of unsupervised minors and irresponsible, derelict parents/guardians
to begin to solve this problem, it has to be openly acknowledged that this is largely exclusive to poor black communities
there are limited amounts of resources that can be applied to alleviate the situation, i.e. work with law enforcement, child protection agencies, etc., and there is no money to be squandered on applying the same standards to white, hispanic, asian communities in which the same problem does not exist

Hashfanatic,
No to the first line, yes to everything else you posted.
It is a left versus right problem because the left has nurtured and promoted the culture, both within families and within the school system, that is responsible for the mess we find ourselves in.
Of course it’s way past the time for blame, and time to come up with practible, realistic, and workable solutions to the problems faced.
Unfortunately, the left controls the education system and more times than not, the lefty solutions, are ineffective, or worse, contribute to the problems faced. The left will not admit failure, and are more interested in promoting more of the same. If you doubt me, simply question a few bureaucrats within the education system, as to what needs to be done.
half of them are not there on any given school day
That's not actually what it means. "Habitual truant" means a student is absent five times or more without an excuse. So about half of MPS kids fit that description, not that half of kids are absent daily.

Yup. What we need is more free sex and State-as-Daddy 'undifferentiated collective' thinking.
That way NOBODY will be in school.
Jay, I know that...
The point is that MORE than half our kids miss way to much school...how can you teach someone who is gone one or two days every week?
”'undifferentiated collective' thinking.”
Don’t that just hit the nail on the head?!
Hell, it kind of sums up the whole game plan, doesn’t it?
Game, I was responding to one of your anons. You'll notice I even quoted the part I was objecting to.
One of these days, when I get my three minutes with Bill and Mindy Gates, I will tell them that their money is better spent in the city than in the schools. I would love to see someone fund, oh, 100 social workers, who would identify (through school, court, unemployment, WIC, etc. records) the 500 most screwed up families in the city and become their case workers. Get them help with literacy, parenting, substance abuse, job training, whatever they need. Turn them around. Then move on to the next 500, and the next, and the next. It might take 30 years but it would work better than NCLB at turning MPS test scores around.
Jay, there is an ACTUAL solution besides simply throwing money at something are running away...
Now, the problem with your plan is at SOME point, these people have to WANT to work hard, have to WANT to make something of themselves...and that is where MY plan comes in. 30 years of black leaders preaching conservative values and making people be ashamed for being lazy and worthless would work as well.
I think you need BOTH plans.
"I would love to see someone fund, oh, 100 social workers, who would identify (through school, court, unemployment, WIC, etc. records) the 500 most screwed up families in the city and become their case workers. Get them help with literacy, parenting, substance abuse, job training, whatever they need. Turn them around."
Jay, for the past forty years or so, these communities have HAD that. One might even say, an overabundance of it.
And no one is better for it, whatsoever.
They will never change on their own, so we are talking about a law enforcement issue, or, rather, we are NOT talking about it, because folks like yourself are so utterly cowed and intimidated by even the prospect of suggesting this is a uniquely black phenomenon that is pulling the entire nation down.
"30 years of black leaders preaching conservative values and making people be ashamed for being lazy and worthless would work as well."
Game, this is an equally meaningless statement and represents no solution whatsoever. There ARE no "conservative values" at the moment, because conservatism as we have known it for the past, oh, forty years or so is in its death rattles, and a fundamental shift in values is happening from within.
So, what you would be saying is, "Let us figure out who we are, and what we stand for, and THEN we'll come up with a way to contribute to a solution", and that's unacceptable.
This is a LAW ENFORCEMENT issue, not a political one, and it may be very politically incorrect to target large numbers one demographic's children for separation from their parent(s) or guardian for corrective discipline, but that is what we are looking at, if we want to solve the problem.
They have to be sent away for long-term detention, so the rest of the students might have even a shot at thriving.
For their sake, we no longer have the luxury of pussyfooting around the situation, and building another irrelevant basketball court on the public's dime.
