you know my answer is that they actually report the news down the middle. It might not look like it because it seems so conservative to someone who is slanted left, or who has watched the liberal media forever....but they call it both ways, and they actually do say conservative things sometimes...which is what makes them fair and balanced...

Is that why they are number one?
Is there another reason?

They are number one because they present both sides of the story and in doing so they really set themselves apart.

In addition from a personality perspective they lead there as well.

Lou Dobbs... Boring. Larry King... Boring. Keith Oberman... Interesting but just too weird.

Your second point is a good one.
They have interesting personalities...not only on their prime time shows, but the anchors as well

The networks still get many more viewers, and I'm reluctant to classify Scarborough and Carlson as liberals.

I'd conjecture that Fox is entertaining -- Hannity and O'Reilly are very good at what they do. In contrast, CNN is neither entertaining nor informative. They talk down to their audience like they're feeding you babyfood, while Fox assumes viewers are up to speed to a certain extent.

In general, the dinosaur media is horrible at informing us about the world, unless you think Tom Cruise's kid or the fate of Natalee Holiday are major global events. OJ-TV was not more important than the Rwandan genocide, and I don't care what nonjudgmental people think about it.

I just love FOX to pieces, but I think they are a product of circumstance and not one of tru "down the middle" accuracy. If they tried to shoot 100% down the middle I wouldn't watch. I want to see conservative views pushed, I want to see progressive views mocked and berated, I want the truth about liberalism to be seen by all. To continue on the point of circumstance, with there being a divide between Republicans and Conservatives the personalities on FOX sometimes don't support the Republican talking points. This may make them appear to be in the middle but really it is indicative of the conservative struggle in this country.

There is nothing wrong with having a conservative channel, of being proud to be conservative. Let's talk about how FOX is a conservative station and that is why it's popular.

Those FOX shows are a product, not news shows. It uses charismatic(yes, I said it)personalities to produce a slick machine that spouts a lot of things people want to be true. Its mostly a far right wing agenda, not centrist. Consequently, it isnt news, or even the truth thats reported, unless it happens to coincide with that agenda. Even your buddy Hannity has said it isnt news.
