Abstinence must be in sex ed, bill says

Madison - Schools that offer human growth and development instruction must include as part of the curriculum the message that abstinence is the preferred behavior for teens, under a bill signed today by Gov. Jim Doyle.

Such instruction is optional, and the law doesn't require abstinence to be taught exclusively, according to Sen. Mary Lazich (R-New Berlin), who authored the bill. But promoting abstinence is a common sense approach to teaching teens about the consequences of sexual activity, she said in a statement.

"If a school chooses to offer sex education, it is important that the message is loud and clear that abstinence is the only way to be safe and healthy," Lazich's statement said.

The abstinence bill was one of a dozen signed by Doyle. For more information about other bills signed, http://www.wisgov.state.wi.us.

Come on libs?
What is wrong with this?
Anything?
This is what my thesis was about...you tell me what you think, I'll comment later...if I can get anyone to comment...

Absolutely nothing wrong with this so far as I can see from your post. That's what my kids learn.

Why would you think that a liberal would think differently? Do you think we tell our children to go out and have sex any time they want?

The only thing people with common sense would object to is an abstinence only program.

There is nothing wrong with this. Thats why your nemesis, Jim Doyle, signed the bill. The only problem libs have, from what I can see, is when Cons try and push 'abstinence only' education. Sorta like the Bush deal where the US wont offer prophylactic support in Africa with out 'abstinence only' education.

I agree with you Rhyno......We shouldn't be offering ANY aid to Africa.

It's throwing good money after bad anyway.

Exactly Jim.

good, glad to see we have some common sense...
I said liberals would object because the word abstinence makes them break out in a rash...
My thesis conclusion is that a true "comprehensive" sex education program needs to have MORE abstinence training than it currently does...

Yes, kids are going to have sex, but that does not mean that if you start at a young age (5th grade), they will not buy into it. My kids proved in my study that they really want to be told more and more about abstinence...it will not save everyone, but anyone who is not sure will be convinced to not do it..

now, abstinence only is okay in the early grades, but by 7th or 8th grade contraception needs to be added...

JUST talking about contraception because "everyone will have sex anyway" actually increases teen pregnancy and STD's because kids have no one telling them to refrain and restrain themselves, and that the condom is the cure all...so it leads to more activity, more oral sex (more STD's), and a false sense of security.

Well, PP, its useless when the govt of that area refuses to allow it. It works when its implemented.
