Well, here is how it happened...
Most teachers are liberal....
Obviously liberal teachers can not keep their own personal politics out of the classroom...
Why doesn't this happen with conservatives?
There are not many conservatives teachers...
They have enough integrity and are smart enough not to inject their own personal opinion into their classroom...
Remember, liberals are emotional beings, they really can't help getting all worked up and try to "save" these children with the algore bible.
They feel that "doing the right thing" for these children is what is best...
Just imagine if in my health class I showed abortions...
What would happen?
It would be relevant to my class. I bet you there are English teachers and math teachers showing algore's movie...

So how did An Inconvenient Truth become required classroom viewing?

My son's environmentla science teacher showed AlGore's movie to her students, including my son. After the viewing, my son had this question:
"How can they predict Global warming when they can't even predict what the weather will be tommorrow?"
Why doesn't this happen with conservatives?
But it does. My American Government teacher pumped us full of conservative propaganda. This would have been back in 1991-1992. I recongnized it easy enough because my mother loved Rush (Limbaugh, not the band, though I had all their records), and it was amazing how many of Limbaugh's frames made it into my class, from "Slick Willy" to all tax cuts all the time.
I won my school's VFW/Voice of America essay contest that year; the topic was something like, "Why are you proud to be an American?" and that teacher was the judge. I crammed my essay full of every jingoistic conservative piece of claptrap I could think of--I didn't mean a word of it. It read like your average righty blog, only with better spelling. :)
He told me I blew everyone else away.
Look, I know that argument by anecdote is not a reasonable thing. But, Game, that's all you're doing as well. It does, however, disprove the notion that conservative teachers never bring politics to the classroom.
(By the way, there's plenty of relevant math in the movie. I doubt English teachers are showing it.)
jay,
I did the exact same thing, except for a liberal professor in college. Pure regurgitation, and he loved it, thought it was the best shit he ever heard, submitted it to some kind of lefty-pump-each-other-up magazine. Not a damn original thought in the piece, just pure, re-worded lefty talking points. Hell I thought he was going to have me run for office. Of course I didn't mean a damn thing I wrote, and could have easily shot down most of the talking points, but I ain't stupid, and know which side my bread is buttered.
Of course with the whole John Dewey mind-think amongst the teachers unions and most professors, your conservative anecdote is pitifully rare. Which is the whole damn point.
BTW, leads me to another point. How the hell did you go through such a right-thinking program and come out - lefty? -.
I've got a theory. OK, I know you can't wait. Kids like to rebell!!! That's why the lefties don't have such a dominant hold on today's youth, as they think they should have. Ya, ya, most kids don't have the time of day for politics, but the few that have, don't like being told what to think; especially when there's so many obvious, unanswered questions. And there is no question. The lefties are mostly in control of what "kids should think".
Well Jay, that was a lovely story from your "yoot". I hear the exact same story all the time. Dennis Prager has a personal anecdote from his college days. A girl from some northwestern state tried to develop a conservative women's club on her campus and related similar tales. Finally, I heard today on Laura Ingraham's show of a young guy who's produced a film detailing the liberal "oppression" at college campuses around the country.
I'll admit, however, that I believe there must be some conservative teacher doing the same thing. But here's the kicker from me: I don't care about libs preaching their crap in schools as long as they allow for opposing opinions and don't grade according to how conservative or liberal the student is.
BTW, you should dig up that paper and learn from your own words. It might be claptrap to you, but if you got the best grade, it was probably more truth.
Hundreds of thousands of teachers are showing liberal crap...and Jay's ONE teacher equals the thousands of teachers
A liberal mind at work
"Why doesn't this happen with conservatives?"
Well, it depends on the subject matter. If you're teaching physics, or chemistry, or computer science, and so forth, it is difficult to politicize the subject matter.
But in the humanities the situation is different, where the Sovietization of American intellectual life has been nearly completed.
They teach Ron's message it is who someone is and not what they have to say that counts. The idea that there is something human in the humanities that transcends our race, gender, sexual orientation, religion, and political ideology is rejected out of hand.
Behind the superficial diversity behind Afrocentrism, Queer Theory, Critical Legal Studies, Media Studies, Women’s Studies, Ethnic Studies, we find a common unity — the Western tradition is logocentric, phallocentric, hegomonic, reactionary, elitist, sexist, racist — and needs to be replaced.
In the more traditional disciplines of study one increasingly sees the same thing. Nothing is "understood" until it is exposed as corrupt, duplicitous, or hypocritical. The intrinsic qualities of a work don't matter-- just how well they can be used to attack bourgeois society. That means silly Navaho myths or poorly written slave narratives are good, and Dante and Shakespeare are bad-- at least until they are "exposed" under a Freudo-Marxist analysis.
Hell, it has gotten to the point where students can fill all their gen-ed requirements from the pomo buffet and get a four-year degree while being completely *ignorant* of the classics.
I love the humanities, and absolutely despise today's Academy.
Awful Al Gores awful attempt at cinema would only be shown in awfully poor classroom settings desperately in need of something constructive to do.At least the kids would be able to do anything else they might need to do and not miss a thing important to their education.
The teachers showing this film to their students are examples of Classroom Hitlers. They are prosletizing, yet should a parent object or demand to be with their child, all Hell breaks loose and the parent becomes the focus of a school administration "pogrom". Parents who don't tow the Liberal union/Democrat line must be kept out of school and not be seen or heard.
