I was looking at some polls.
Liberals, can you tell me why Dem's are on the wrong side on these issues?
Eighty percent (80%) believe that newcomers to this land should focus on assimilating American culture rather than maintaining the culture of their home country
When people try and make English the official language, Democrats and the ACLU block it.
A majority (55%) continue to say that given a choice between more government services and higher taxes versus fewer services and lower taxes, they'd pick the latter trade-off
16% of American voters now say that Congress is doing a Good (13%) or an Excellent (3%) job.
Also, I argue that Dems are usually negative about our country and think it is evil.
(41%) and liberals (45%) are more likely than Republicans (23%) and conservatives (24%) to consider American society unfair.
31% of Dem's think most Americans are racists.
Okay, stick to this issue and answer.

Why do Dem's hold these positions?

Perhaps a clue can be found in the meaning of the two words.
"Conservatives" conserve. They cling to what is, hold dear the status quo, view our current position in history as the pinnacle, and view change with suspicion.
"Liberals" liberate. They try to break free of constraints, acknowledge alternatives may be superior to current practice, envision a future better than the present, and welcome change.
Faced with any less than ideal political situation, cognitive dissonance kicks in. Conservates tend to hold ground, or worse, turn a blind eye. Liberals may overreact, act too quickly, or rashly, or without enough thought.
Perhaps not entirely accurate, but something to think about.

Nice "traditional" definitions of conservatives and liberals.
Unfortunatly, the definitions don't fully (maybe partially) define what is considered the current (or accepted) philosophies of cons and libs.

jimspice, I don't think it's a stretch to acknowledge that the more socialist leaning persons in this country have found a home (a very welcome home) in the dem party, and constantly blame the U.S. for many ills in this world.
At the root of this criticism, is a hatred of capatilism and personal freedoms. Both of which can be said are "cornerstones" of this great nation.
Is our country's system without flaws? No, but it's demonstrably better than what socialist envision.

As far as your "cognitive dissonance" reference goes, I'd say it perfectly describes liberals' vision of the Great Society experiment.

I never understood the right's disdain for the ACLU; you know, the whole "card carrying member" aspersions. I can think of nothing more patriotic than defending the Constitution and Bill of Rights. I guess in that case is the lefties that are the lovers of personal freedoms.
Of course a single issue organization like this must defend its purpose wholeheartedly, 100% of the time, regardless of those being represented, and therefore often take on an almost cartoonish aura. Of course the same could be said of any organization, left or right, which defends a single issue.
As for Capitolism, please keep in mind that we lefties are not so easily painted with your broad brush. I'm a big fan of the big "C", as are many of my brethren (and sistren? that doesn't sound right) and would simply settle for a more progressive tax structure and a more complete accounting of political influen$e.

How does making English the official language aid assimilation? Second language acquisition and acculturation is not something that can be beaten into a person. There is so much about the nativist arguments against immigration is just plain wrong.
